The William Wise Mine, on Bald Hill near Westmoreland in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, is the signature American locality for a very particular look: vivid green fluorite octahedra, often translucent to gemmy, sitting in and on white, colorless, smoky, or iron-stained quartz. It is not a pegmatite pocket mine in the usual New England sense. The mineralization belongs to the Westmoreland fluorspar district, a small but historically important group of fluorite-quartz veins in the metamorphic and granitic terrain east of the Connecticut River valley. The district’s fluorite was once an industrial mineral, hand-sorted for fluorspar; the William Wise Mine later became a specimen mine and gem-rough source whose finest pieces stand comfortably beside much larger and more famous fluorite districts.
The mine matters to collectors because its best fluorites have an unmistakable personality. The crystals are typically octahedral rather than cubic, in saturated apple-, lime-, or emerald-green tones, with frosted or subtly etched faces and a brightness that can look almost unnatural until a specimen is seen in hand. Fine pieces show complete, sharp to lightly etched octahedra rising cleanly from quartz, not merely cleaved loose fragments. Larger matrix specimens are scarce, and intact plates with multiple octahedra and contrasting quartz are among the classic New England fluorites.
Historically, the mine bridges three collecting worlds. It is an old fluorspar working, active by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; a modern specimen locality reopened and worked intermittently for collectors; and a gem locality whose green fluorite has been faceted in New Hampshire and promoted as a distinctive regional gemstone. Its name appears repeatedly in Rocks & Minerals, The Mineralogical Record, Mineral News, museum displays, and dealer records because the mine has produced both cabinet specimens and gem rough of unusual color.

The setting is compact and wooded, but the locality’s reach is large. William Wise fluorite is represented in major collections, including Harvard Museum of Natural History displays, and a New Hampshire fluorite from the mine has been used to represent the state in the Smithsonian’s recent national exhibition context. For a collector building a suite of eastern U.S. minerals, a good William Wise fluorite is not simply “a New Hampshire fluorite”; it is one of the few fluorites from New England with a widely recognized, locality-defining specimen style.

The William Wise Mine is in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, southwestern New Hampshire, near the Vermont border and the Connecticut River valley. The mine is one of the Westmoreland fluorspar occurrences, a cluster of veins that includes the Wise, Stoddard, Springer, Pierce, and related workings. The locality is usually referred to in older collecting literature as the Wise Mine, Will Wise Mine, or William Wise Mine; the mineralized structure is specifically known as the William Wise vein.
Geologically, the deposit is a fluorite-quartz vein system rather than a granitic pegmatite. Regional descriptions place the Westmoreland fluorspar district in granite gneiss overlain by hornblende schist, quartzite, and staurolite-mica schist. The productive veins are lenticular to tabular fluorite-quartz bodies near the contact with the overlying hornblende schist. The useful ore was blue-green to green fluorite occurring as lenses, pockets, and fine-grained intergrowths with quartz, calcite, and barite; sulfides such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and molybdenite occur only sparingly.
The old fluorspar workings were shallow compared with major western or midwestern fluorite districts, and much of the commercial material was hand sorted. This is important to collectors because it explains both the scarcity and the character of good specimens. The massive parts of the veins were ore, but the collector pieces came from open spaces along vein margins and from pockets where fluorite could grow as distinct crystals with quartz. Reports in the specimen trade refer to deep shafts and thick fluorite veins pursued during the early industrial period, while later specimen projects entered or worked around the old workings for the limited pockets that still held displayable material.
Mining began around the 1890s and the main early period had ended by about 1919, with American Tube and Stamping Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut, recorded as an owner in 1918–1919. Broader Westmoreland district production continued in more than one period, with district summaries noting roughly 8,000 tons of fluorspar produced in 1911–1923 and 1935–1938. One modern newspaper summary of an official report gives about 3,500 tons of fluorspar from the William Wise pit mine during about 1908–1917. These figures should be read as district and mine-history context rather than as a measure of specimen abundance: fine crystallized pieces were always a small by-product of an industrial fluorspar operation.
The modern collecting chapter is just as significant as the early mine history. Since the 1980s the property has been associated with Bob Borofsky and Green Gem Company, which has promoted and cut the mine’s green fluorite as a New Hampshire gemstone. The mine has also been worked intermittently for specimens, and named collectors and miners such as Jim Tovey and Bob Borofsky recur on specimen labels. A 1990 Rocks & Minerals cover and article helped fix the locality in the modern collector’s imagination, while later Mineral News and Mineralogical Record references tracked continuing finds, faceted material, and unusual associated minerals.
Access today should be treated as private and permission-only. The mine is not a casual public collecting site. Published locality pages and collector forums stress permission and safety, and the modern ownership history makes clear that this is a controlled mineral property rather than an abandoned free-for-all. Older directions in collecting guides are historically interesting but should not be used as an invitation to visit. For serious collectors, the realistic routes to William Wise material are established mineral dealers, older New England collections, club-connected specimens with clear provenance, and the occasional modern piece from authorized work.
The best-known finds produced green fluorite octahedra in quartz, loose and on matrix, from thumbnail size through cabinet pieces. Auction and dealer records document crystals commonly in the 1–4 cm range, with exceptional pieces carrying larger octahedra: a 4.3 cm octahedron on quartz, a 6.3 cm main crystal in a former John H. Marshall specimen, a 7.3 cm loose floater, and an unusually large cabinet specimen with crystals reported to 8 cm. Quartz plates, scepters, smoky-tipped crystals, and occasional amethystine quartz broaden the locality’s appeal beyond fluorite alone.
William Wise fluorite is the locality’s defining mineral: green CaF2 in octahedral crystals, commonly translucent to gemmy, with frosted, etched, or subtly textured faces and a color range from pale sea-foam to saturated emerald-green. Most specimens are thumbnails to small cabinet pieces, with crystals around 1–3 cm being typical in the market, while exceptional crystals exceed 4 cm and the largest documented display pieces reach substantially beyond that. The classic association is quartz—colorless, milky, smoky, iron-stained, or sceptered—with occasional calcite and barite noted in the vein assemblage. Good specimens show complete natural octahedra, strong green color, attractive contrast against quartz, and minimal cleavage bruising; ordinary pieces are often partial, loose, cleaved, or visually flat despite having the right locality label. The most desirable matrix pieces appear to come from open pockets and vein-margin zones rather than the massive fluorspar ore itself, which is why large, undamaged plates are much scarcer than single fragments.
Quartz from the William Wise Mine is more than a neutral matrix for fluorite, although that is its most familiar role. It occurs as drusy to prismatic crystals, commonly white to colorless and locally iron-stained orange-brown; smoky quartz, amethyst, and scepter quartz are all documented from the mine. Mineralogical Record index entries and specimen descriptions record milky scepters to about 5 cm, white scepters with smoky tips to about 5 cm, small scepters with green fluorite, Japan-law twins to about 9 cm, and quartz crystals to about 5 cm. Good William Wise quartz pieces are sharp, clean, and undamaged enough to stand as quartz specimens in their own right, especially when sceptered, smoky-tipped, or accompanied by a well-placed green fluorite octahedron. More routine examples are quartz plates with scattered cleaved fluorite or iron staining but without strong crystal form or composition.
Beyond fluorite and quartz, the mine has a compact but interesting suite. Mindat lists 16 valid minerals from the locality, including baryte, calcite, dolomite, siderite, smithsonite, cerussite, malachite, wulfenite, ferrimolybdite, rutile, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and molybdenite. No accepted type-locality mineral is documented from the William Wise Mine, but the rarity interest is real: wulfenite has been noted as tiny crystals on quartz, cerussite appears in Mineralogical Record indexing, and ferrimolybdite, molybdenite, and the lead-zinc-copper minerals mark the more complex accessory chemistry of the vein system.
William Wise fluorite is a locality where condition and provenance matter intensely. Fluorite has perfect octahedral cleavage, and many William Wise pieces show edge wear, bruising, or outright cleaved surfaces. Because the natural habit at this mine is also octahedral, loose crystals require careful inspection: natural octahedra should show growth texture, subtle etching, luster continuity, and believable locality style, while artificially cleaved octahedra tend to have flatter, fresher cleavage faces and less convincing surface history. This does not make loose crystals undesirable—some superb floaters are known—but it does make old labels, collection history, and careful surface examination important.
Matrix pieces are the premium format. The finest examples have green fluorite perched on contrasting quartz, with the fluorite complete and the quartz not badly chipped. Many otherwise attractive specimens have small broken quartz tips, iron-stained matrix, or peripheral cleaves on fluorite; these are common enough that a piece with no obvious damage commands a strong premium. A single sharp octahedron isolated on quartz may be more desirable than a larger but battered plate.
The color is a major authenticity cue but not a guarantee. William Wise green can be unusually vivid, and old descriptions compare it with emerald or saturated crayon green. However, green fluorites from Riemvasmaak, China, Rogerley, and other localities can also be bright, so locality attribution should not rest on color alone. Look for the full combination: New Hampshire-style quartz matrix, octahedral habit, lightly etched or frosted faces, documented provenance, and labels that trace through known New England collectors, dealers, or mine operators.
Fluorescence is a useful bonus. William Wise fluorites are often described as fluorescent under long-wave and short-wave ultraviolet light, with auction records noting bright to rich purple responses and “super” fluorescence. UV response is not a substitute for provenance, but it adds to display appeal and helps separate a lively specimen from a dull one. As with all fluorite, avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, hard knocks, and jewelry-style wear without protection. Faceted Wise fluorite is beautiful but soft, cleavable, and best treated as a collector gem rather than an everyday ring stone.
Market availability is uneven. Small loose octahedra and modest quartz-associated pieces appear periodically, especially from older collections. Fine matrix specimens, large complete crystals, and pieces with documented Borofsky, Tovey, Marshall, Whitmore, Rice Museum, or other strong provenance are substantially scarcer. Prices can range from modest for partial or damaged examples to several thousand dollars for major cabinet specimens with size, color, and condition.
One of the best collecting stories from the William Wise Mine begins not with a pocket but with a calendar mistake. In October 1998, Don Kauffman and Linda Kauffman were traveling in New Hampshire, building their knowledge of the Granite State locality by locality. They had been invited by mine co-owner Jim Tovey to collect at the famous William Wise Mine with a local mineral club. They arrived a week early.
At many private mineral localities, that would have ended the day. At the Wise Mine, it became the beginning of a friendship. Tovey, by Kauffman’s account, let them stay and collect without “an unkind word.” The reward was not merely a few scraps from an old dump: they carried out green fluorite that Kauffman described as fine, world-class grade “B” material. The episode reads like a small New England rockhound parable—wrong week, right person, right mine—and it placed Jim Tovey in the story as one of the living links between the old fluorspar workings and the modern specimen era.
The 1990 modern spotlight is another important chapter. By then, the William Wise Mine had moved beyond regional collecting lore. A specimen found by Bob Borofsky was featured on the July/August 1990 cover of Rocks & Minerals, accompanying James Young’s article on the fluorite deposits of Westmoreland. That cover mattered. It gave collectors a memorable image of New Hampshire green fluorite at a time when American specimen collecting was increasingly attentive to locality classics, not merely giant western mines and pegmatites.
The mine also took an unusual turn into the gem world. In the early 1990s, Borofsky began faceting green fluorite from the Wise Mine and setting it in gold for friends and family. Demand grew, and the material became the basis for Green Gem Company’s regional gemstone identity. The appeal was the same quality that makes the specimens so distinctive: a clean, pure green that writers and dealers have repeatedly compared with emerald. The paradox is part of the charm—fluorite is too soft and cleavable to be practical as everyday jewelry, yet the Wise Mine’s color is so compelling that cutters and collectors keep returning to it.
In 2026, the locality’s story widened again when a bright green fluorite from the William Wise Mine became New Hampshire’s representative rock in coverage of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s “From These Lands” exhibition. The show brought together more than 600 objects from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. For a small mine in the woods of southwestern New Hampshire, it was a fitting public role: the William Wise Mine is not the state’s biggest mine, but few New Hampshire minerals are more immediately recognizable in a museum case.
