York Building Supply Quarry, better known to generations of East Coast collectors as the Delta Carbonate, York Stone, or Roosevelt Avenue quarry, is one of Pennsylvania’s classic calcite localities. It is not a polymetallic mine or a pegmatite with a long species list; its reputation rests on a remarkably distinctive style of calcite from cavities in Cambrian carbonate rock near York, Pennsylvania. The quarry exposes parts of the Kinzers and Ledger carbonate sequence in the West York block of the Conestoga Valley, a structurally complex slice of early Paleozoic carbonate rocks whose industrial value has kept the operation alive while periodically revealing collector pockets.
The best York calcites are instantly recognizable: translucent honey-yellow to burnt-orange crystals, commonly twinned, stacked, lenticular, pseudo-trapezohedral, or scalenohedral, with iron-oxide coloration concentrated as coatings, surface films, inclusions, or phantoms. Fine pieces have a glowing inner amber light, satiny to bright luster, and a sculptural compactness that distinguishes them from paler Thomasville material and from the more common gray-limestone quarry calcites of the mid-Atlantic. The locality’s collector history is pocket-driven. Isolated finds are documented from the 1970s and 1990s, but the quarry’s modern fame was fixed by the richly colored pockets collected around 2000–2004 and by later finds around 2008–2009. Because the quarry has been an active industrial aggregate operation, not a public collecting site, most important specimens entered collections through organized access, field collectors with permission, old collections, dealer dispersals, and museum gifts.

The quarry is the present Roosevelt Quarry of York Building Products at Roosevelt Avenue in York, Pennsylvania. Mineral collectors will also encounter older labels reading Delta Carbonate Quarry, York Stone Quarry, Roosevelt Avenue Quarry, or simply Roosevelt Quarry; for specimen provenance, those names refer to the same classic calcite locality as used in modern mineral databases. Delta Carbonate is the important older commercial name, while York Building Products is the modern operator of the Roosevelt aggregate quarry.
Geologically, the quarry cuts Cambrian carbonate strata in the West York block of the Conestoga Valley. Stratigraphic work on the quarry area documented the Kinzers Formation and the overlying Ledger Formation, including the York Member of the Kinzers and the Willis Run Member of the Ledger. The relevant rocks are industrial carbonate units—limestones and dolomites with local shale, silt, chert, pyrite, organic-rich limestone, breccia, and hematitic staining depending on bed and member. This is the right geological recipe for isolated, solution-enlarged cavities and fracture openings in limestone: carbonate host rock, open space created or reopened by deformation and dissolution, and late fluids capable of depositing calcite while carrying enough iron to tint or coat crystal surfaces.
For collectors, the “ore body” is not an ore body at all but a sequence of pockets and vugs in quarried limestone. The great specimens came where blasting and quarrying intersected open cavities or brecciated zones. Some pockets were lined with calcite on limestone walls; others yielded freestanding or near-floater crystals released from clay, iron-stained carbonate debris, or broken pocket lining. The best specimens preserve undamaged crystals on original limestone matrix, but many fine crystals are matrix-free because the host rock had to be broken away or because the crystals detached naturally during pocket opening.
Commercially, the operation has been an industrial carbonate quarry rather than a mineral-specimen mine. Historic documents and locality records place Delta Carbonate in production in the 20th century; by the late 1990s, York Building Products was documented operating the Roosevelt Avenue quarry, and the site remains an active aggregate operation. Modern product documents describe Roosevelt Quarry output as construction aggregate, with products such as AASHTO stone sizes used in concrete, asphalt, drainage, driveways, and related construction applications.
Specimen production is best understood as a series of episodes. A major large-crystal pocket was collected in January 1974, producing at least one extraordinary burnt-orange twinned crystal later passing through several major calcite collections. A 1993 find produced a striking Delaware Mineralogical Museum specimen from a crystal-lined pocket opened high on a slanted quarry wall. Material was collected again in August 1994, including smaller pale yellow to reddish crystals. The famous Orange Pocket, discovered around 2000, produced many of the intensely orange, iron-oxide-coated calcites now considered the locality standard. Subsequent pockets in 2003 showed more diverse habits, including stacked lenticular forms and chocolate or limonitic phantoms, while “Big Wall” material collected in 2004 is associated with twinned forms, re-entrant edges, and visible internal phantoms. Later collecting by James “Skip” Colflesh in 2008–2009 yielded the “Broken Heel Pocket,” noted for lustrous, unusual forms rather than the heaviest orange coating.
Access today should be considered closed to casual collecting. Roosevelt Quarry is an active commercial quarry with blasting, heavy equipment, benches, and MSHA-style industrial hazards. Collecting requires explicit permission from the operator and compliance with all site safety requirements; old reports of specimens should not be interpreted as permission to enter.
Calcite from York Building Supply Quarry is the locality’s defining mineral and one of the great eastern U.S. calcite styles: pale yellow, honey, amber, orange, and burnt-orange crystals in twinned, scalenohedral, rhombohedral, stacked, lenticular, pseudo-trapezohedral, and locally ball-like habits, commonly with iron-oxide films or inclusions responsible for the color. Documented crystals range from small thumbnails of about 1.25–4 cm to cabinet crystals and groups in the 6–13 cm range; the largest classic material includes orange scalenohedral crystals cited to about 20 cm and an exceptional 17.9 x 13.2 x 9.7 cm twinned crystal weighing more than 2 kg. Associations are usually simple—calcite on or with limestone matrix, later calcite generations, iron oxides or limonite, and occasional phantoms—so quality is judged by color saturation, translucency, completeness, luster, sharpness of twin form, preservation on matrix, and whether the orange coloration is natural and integrated rather than merely dirt on broken surfaces. The best pieces came from named or remembered pockets such as the 1974 large-crystal pocket, the 1993 pocket, the 2000 Orange Pocket, the 2003 diverse-habit pockets, the 2004 Big Wall material, and the 2008–2009 Broken Heel Pocket.
Only one other mineral species is firmly documented from the quarry in modern locality records: celestine, SrSO4, analytically confirmed by Lance Kearns in connection with a 2010 Mineral News note by Skip Colflesh. The rarity of celestine here is collector-significant precisely because the locality is otherwise dominated by calcite; no type-locality mineral species are credited to York Building Supply Quarry in the standard references consulted.
The main authenticity issue is locality naming, not outright fakery. A correct older label may read Delta Carbonate Quarry, York Stone Quarry, or Roosevelt Avenue Quarry, while a modern label may read York Building Supply Quarry or York Building Products Roosevelt Quarry. These are not automatically conflicting provenances. More problematic are vague labels that say only “York, Pennsylvania,” because York County has several carbonate quarries that have produced calcite, especially Thomasville. Thomasville calcites can resemble York Building Supply material, but they are commonly paler, waxier, and differently modified; the richest orange, iron-stained twins and lenticular forms are the signature York/Delta Carbonate look.
No specific, well-documented fake or artificial color treatment scandal is associated with the locality. The orange color should be understood as natural iron-oxide staining, coating, or inclusion, not as dye. That said, collectors should inspect overly bright pieces for modern oiling, wax, resin, glue repairs, or enhanced wet-look surfaces, because calcite’s low hardness and high cleavability make damaged crystals tempting candidates for cosmetic improvement. Sawn matrix sides are known on some market specimens and are not inherently deceptive when disclosed; they simply reflect trimming for display.
Condition is the central collecting challenge. York calcite cleaves easily, and many otherwise fine crystals show bruised edges, cleaved backs, pocket-wall contacts, or contact roughness where a crystal separated from limestone. Surface iron oxides can make a crystal look richer, but they can also hide small chips. Matrix pieces are especially desirable because many crystals were removed loose or detached during collecting, yet matrix examples often show trimming scars or damage along the pocket-wall side. Handle pieces by the matrix or broad crystal base, avoid acid cleaning unless you are deliberately sacrificing calcite, and keep them away from harder specimens in drawers.
Fluorescence is not the locality’s calling card; color, form, translucency, and twinning matter far more in the market. Availability is moderate for ordinary single crystals and small groups because several productive pockets entered collections, but top examples are scarce. Large, complete, richly orange, translucent twins with old provenance—especially George Feist, Ed David, Gerald Kloc, Ira Smith, Skip Colflesh, or documented museum connections—are now classic American calcites rather than casual quarry pieces.
One of the best York calcite stories begins not with a famous dealer opening a case at Tucson, but with three collectors standing at the bottom of the quarry in 1993. Eric Meier, Bill Longacre, and Joe Hoffman were working the Delta Carbonate quarry when Hoffman noticed a small hole about 25 feet up a slanted wall that could be climbed. The opening was modest, but the rock around it was brecciated limestone—a promising sign. They began chiseling. As the hole widened, it broke into a cavity completely lined with calcite. The pocket was about 18 inches high, 10 to 12 feet wide, and tapered back roughly 8 feet, a shallow but broad seam of crystal-bearing space in the limestone wall.
Getting the calcite out was harder than finding it. The brecciated zone gave way to tougher, less cooperative limestone around the crystals. The collectors shoved a blanket into the pocket to cushion specimens as they loosened them, then worked the rock with hammers and chisels. When the pocket was finished, they divided the haul by rolling dice for first pick. Meier rolled a double six. His prize was the specimen later displayed in the Delaware Mineralogical Museum, with a main crystal about 4.5 inches across and so little encrustation that it required only minimal cleaning.
The next great chapter belongs to James “Skip” Colflesh, already a familiar name to Pennsylvania collectors. Between 2000 and 2002 he collected large quantities of calcite from the York locality with Bryon Brookmyer and Bob Weaver, and his short Rocks & Minerals article fixed the 2000 pocket in the collecting literature. Colflesh later described “crystals up to ~8” and noted a 2003 pocket that produced even greater diversity of form. That remark neatly captures why York calcites fascinate connoisseurs: the locality is not merely orange; it is morphologically restless. Rhombs, prisms, scalenohedra, twins, stacked forms, lenticular masses, ball-like aggregates, phantoms, and iron-rich color zones all occur within what seems at first glance to be a simple limestone-quarry calcite occurrence.
An older large-crystal pocket gives the locality an even deeper pedigree. A huge burnt-orange twinned crystal, later in the Ed David collection, was collected on January 26–27, 1974 by Ira Smith, a calcite-focused East Coast collector. Bryon Brookmyer later identified the find as the only pocket of such large crystals in that style known from the locality. The crystal passed from the Ira Smith collection to Brookmyer and dealer Neal Pfaff in 1986, then to Gerald Kloc, a collector known for calcite twins, and eventually into the Ed David collection when the Kloc collection was dispersed in 2003. By the time it was photographed and published online, it measured 17.9 x 13.2 x 9.7 cm, weighed more than 2 kg, and had acquired the sort of provenance chain that turns a quarry specimen into a recognized American classic.
