Shilu is one of the defining Chinese localities for secondary copper carbonates: a skarn-type Cu-Mo-Fe deposit in the Yangchun Basin of western Guangdong whose oxidized karst ore yielded velvety malachite and deep-blue azurite in specimen quality. For collectors, the name “Shilu” usually means the Guangdong Shilu Cu-Fe mine near Yangchun, not the much larger Shilu iron district on Hainan Island; the Guangdong locality is the source of the classic azurite “roses” and the plush, chatoyant malachite that appeared in quantity from the late twentieth century onward. The deposit sits where Early Cretaceous granodiorite and quartz diorite intruded Carboniferous carbonate rocks, producing skarn and skarnized marble along structurally controlled contacts. Later oxidation in karst cavities and weathered skarn converted copper-bearing primary ore into the collectible blues and greens that made the mine famous.
The best Shilu pieces have a very recognizable look. Malachite tends to form dark forest-green to brighter emerald botryoids, hemispheres, and velvety carpets with a moving “eye” effect under a point light. Azurite occurs as lustrous bladed, tabular, or short-prismatic crystals gathered into rounded rosettes and floaters, commonly accented by malachite. Fine pieces can be complete all around, unusually sculptural, and more elegant than the ordinary massive green ore that once went straight to the mill. Shilu’s importance is partly aesthetic and partly historical: it is an old copper-mining district with activity traced back roughly two millennia, later transformed into a modern open-pit mine whose oxidized ore became one of China’s great mineral-specimen exports.

The collector locality is the Shilu Cu-Fe mine of Yangchun County, Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, China, in the Xishan mining area near Mashui, about 10 km southwest of Yangchun City. Mindat places the mine at approximately 22°10'19" N, 111°38'43" E and classifies it as a flooded open-cast mine. The site is part of the Yangchun Basin in the Yunkai area, a NE-SW-trending fault-bounded metallogenic region with abundant Mesozoic granitoid-related Cu, Mo, Pb-Zn, W, Sn, and Fe mineralization.
Geologically, Shilu is best understood as a porphyry-skarn Cu-Mo deposit with an exceptionally productive oxidized copper zone. The main intrusive rocks are granodiorite and quartz diorite, dated in modern studies at roughly 107 to 104 Ma, with molybdenite Re-Os ages around 104 to 102 Ma tying the Cu-Mo mineralization to Early Cretaceous magmatism. The principal orebodies are developed along contact zones between these intrusions and carbonate country rocks, especially Lower Carboniferous limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and shale units. NE-trending faults provided the structural framework, and later weathering in the karstic carbonate environment generated oxidized ore bodies in weathered skarn and Quaternary cover.
The deposit is reported with average primary grades around 0.9% Cu and 0.21% Mo, along with iron, silver, and sulfur values. In specimen terms, however, the important point is that the oxidized ore was not merely a thin stain on sulfide rock. Shilu developed extensive copper-carbonate mineralization in a karst setting, with malachite described historically as the main oxidized ore mineral. This is why so many attractive specimens are not matrix-bound sulfide fragments but rounded floaters, vugs, nodules, crusts, and botryoidal masses whose forms record growth in open spaces or replacement along reactive carbonate/skarn surfaces.
Mining at Shilu is traditionally traced back to the Han Dynasty, and modern sources repeat a history of copper extraction going back about 2,000 years. Large-scale open-pit development began in the 1960s, with open-pit work specifically documented from 1966 and excavation below the water table by 1970. Peak production came in the 1970s. Karst groundwater was a constant engineering issue: by the period described in a mine-water-control study, Shilu required 18 to 22 sets of 254 mm deep-well pumps, moving roughly 60,000 to 80,000 m3/day to hold down the artesian karst water below the orebody footwall. The mine is reported to have closed in 1998 after exhaustion of workable resources, and its open cast has since been recorded as flooded, with an abandoned processing plant and mine views documented in locality photographs.
The classic azurite production reached the international collector market in quantity in the late twentieth century. Thousands of azurite floater roses are reported from Shilu, many in the 3 to 5 cm range, with better specimens up to about 13 cm and large cabinet examples reaching 14 cm in published and exhibition photography. Some of the familiar pieces are complete, rounded clusters of bladed or tabular azurite crystals; others are rosette groups partly altered or accented by malachite. Malachite production includes small cabinet floaters, thick botryoidal knobs, banded chatoyant masses, and large showy plates documented to at least 24 to 33 cm in published Chinese-mineral photography. More recent dealer and auction records indicate that attractive velvety malachite was again available from old Shilu workings or old-stock channels in the 2015-2020 period, though the mine itself should be regarded as an abandoned, flooded industrial site rather than an accessible collecting locality.
Shilu malachite is the locality’s signature mineral, occurring as velvety to silky botryoidal masses, rounded floaters, hemispherical knobs, crusts, and banded chatoyant forms in dark forest green through brighter emerald green. It came from the oxidized karst-hosted copper ore in weathered skarn and carbonate-hosted zones, commonly with azurite, chrysocolla, limonite, and other secondary copper minerals. Small cabinet pieces around 5 to 10 cm are common enough on the market, while better documented cabinet and exhibition specimens reach much larger sizes, including showy 20 cm-plus malachites. Ordinary Shilu malachite can be dull, granular, or merely massive; the pieces serious collectors prize are complete, undamaged floaters or sculptural botryoids with strong silky luster, clean surface texture, rich natural green color, and a distinct moving chatoyant pattern under direct light.
Shilu azurite is famous for rounded rosettes and floater balls made of lustrous bladed, tabular, blocky, or short-prismatic crystals, usually in saturated azure to deep royal blue and often carrying minor malachite as a green accent. The classic production yielded large numbers of complete floater roses, especially miniatures and small cabinet pieces in the 3 to 8 cm range, with the best examples reported up to about 13 cm and exhibition pieces around 14 cm. Some specimens show iron staining or bruised crystal edges, so quality depends heavily on depth and evenness of color, luster on individual blades, completeness all around, and whether the rosette has a balanced sculptural form rather than a jumbled aggregate. Pieces with tasteful malachite contrast are desirable, but the top azurites remain those with crisp, undamaged, richly blue crystal rosettes.
Beyond malachite and azurite, verified mineral records from Shilu include chrysocolla, cuprite, native copper, bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, pyrite, magnetite, calcite, dolomite, siderite, quartz, barite, chlorite-group minerals, serpentine-group minerals, muscovite/sericite, albite, andesine, labradorite, orthoclase, titanite, zircon, apatite, magnesio-hornblende, tschermakite, diopside, garnet-group minerals, and skarn minerals including andraditic garnet and vesuvianite described in recent geochemical work. No type-locality mineral species is established for the Guangdong Shilu collector locality in the verified records, but the site is mineralogically more than a carbonate specimen mine: it preserves a primary Cu-Mo skarn system, a strongly oxidized karst copper orebody, and a secondary suite that includes collectible chrysocolla and rare native-copper or cuprite associations when labels are reliable.
Shilu specimens are not rare in the broad sense—many malachites and azurites entered the international market—but truly fine examples are far scarcer than the locality name suggests. The common material is small, bruised, dull, granular, or overly massive. The premium pieces are complete floaters, cabinet-sized botryoids with strong “velvet” chatoyancy, or azurite rosettes with high luster, strong blue color, and minimal edge wear. Large Shilu malachites can be heavy, rounded, and deceptively smooth; inspect carefully for rubbed high points, pressure bruises, glued contacts, and flattened back surfaces where a display side has been selected from a less complete mass.
The most important authenticity issue is locality confusion, not a well-documented Shilu-specific treatment industry. Shilu malachite can resemble velvety material from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while labels for Chinese malachite, “Yangchun mine,” “Shi Lu,” “Shilu Copper Mine,” and sometimes vague “China” material are not always used consistently. One Mindat gallery note even records a malachite photographed under Shilu whose recorded locality was D.R. Congo, illustrating how easily velvety green copper carbonates can be mixed in dealer and collector records. Conversely, Shilu azurite roses are distinctive but can be confused with other Chinese azurites if the label has been lost. Provenance, old labels, collection history, and comparison with known Shilu habits matter.
Be cautious with very bright, uniformly colored azurite-malachite decorative pieces, especially polished masses, beads, and carvings sold outside mineral-specialist channels. General azurite/malachite imitations made from dyed or resin-bound material are common in the wider gem trade, and chemically altered malachite/chrysocolla material from other sources has been documented in recent years. For Shilu display specimens, the best safeguards are natural crystal or fibrous surface texture, believable growth zoning, undyed-looking color variation, correct heft and feel for carbonate minerals, and microscopic inspection for resin, paint pooling, or unnatural granular composite texture.
Azurite is softer than quartz and can be scratched or dulled by rough handling; Shilu rosettes often expose many small blade edges and are best handled by the matrix or mounted on a custom base. Malachite’s fibrous surfaces can trap dust, and the silky chatoyancy that makes Shilu pieces so attractive is easily diminished by abrasion. Avoid washing delicate velvety malachite under force, avoid acids, and keep both azurite and malachite away from prolonged damp storage. Neither species is a practical fluorescent mineral from this locality; the display value is all in form, color, texture, and luster under clean white light.
The most memorable Shilu story is commercial rather than romantic: an old copper mine in a karst basin suddenly began feeding the world market with azurite roses. The best contemporary account describes “thousands” of floater-type azurite roses, some reaching about 13 cm. At first, the finest examples commanded more than a thousand dollars apiece. Then more kept arriving. Prices fell, and in London one buyer was able to purchase several hundred fine little 3 to 5 cm floater roses for roughly $12 each. That arc—from expensive novelty to abundant show stock—is exactly how Shilu entered collector memory: the material was good enough to be taken seriously, abundant enough to travel widely, and distinctive enough that decades later a rounded blue Shilu floater is still recognizable across a bourse table.
Another telling episode comes from a single azurite now illustrated on Wikimedia Commons. It is a 5.9 x 4.4 x 4.4 cm elongated floater of intergrown bladed rosettes, with scattered malachite. The label history is unusually evocative: the specimen is described as a late-1980s piece donated by a representative of the People’s Republic of China, a guest at the Tucson show, to a Mineralogical Record benefit auction. It reportedly retained labels from both the Beijing Museum and the Mineralogical Record. For a Shilu azurite, that kind of provenance does more than decorate the back of a specimen; it pins the piece to the period when Chinese minerals were beginning to enter Western collecting culture in a new, highly visible way.
The mine itself had a less glamorous drama beneath the specimen production. Shilu’s oxidized ore sat in karst, and when the open pit went below the groundwater table around 1970 the operation had to fight the aquifer continuously. A 1987 mine-water paper describes 18 to 22 deep-well pumps, each 254 mm, pulling 60,000 to 80,000 m3/day. Up to 30,000 m3/day of that pumped water could be used by the mine’s ore-mining, processing, and smelting facilities. The numbers matter because they explain the strange marriage of geology and specimen quality at Shilu: the same carbonate terrain that made cavities, weathered skarn, and malachite-rich oxidized ore also made the mine a hydraulic problem on an industrial scale.
Recent market history adds a final chapter. A 14.5 x 9.2 x 8.5 cm Shilu malachite sold in the 2020 Dallas Mineral Collecting Symposium benefit auction for $9,001, with proceeds supporting Mineralogical Record, Rocks & Minerals, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, and mindat.org. The catalog description focused not on rarity alone but on the moving optical effect: circles flashing on the knobs as the light moves. A smaller 8.3 x 5.2 x 4.0 cm Shilu malachite floater sold in 2023 for $126 after active bidding, and its catalog suggested that some material dated from 2015-2020, when part of the old mine was apparently reopened for specimen recovery. Together those two sales show the breadth of the Shilu market: affordable velvety floaters still circulate, but a large, complete, mesmerizing cabinet specimen can compete strongly when the eye appeal is exceptional.
