Baryte on Dolomite
Few regions in the world produce mineral specimens that are so distinctive that there is really no need to read the label to know where they are from. The West Cumbrian Iron Mining District is one such area and it can be the fascinating tactile bubbly botryoidal Hematite known as Kidney Ore, or the combination of cream coloured layers of saddle-shaped Dolomite in combination with pale blue Fluorite, or pale blue, grey, or cream coloured bladed crystals of Baryte - they are just so unique to that district. This great sized cabinet Baryte on Dolomite from near the town of Frizington makes for a really fine example. Translucent to clear pale blue Baryte crystals up to 8.5 cm in length and 3 cm wide, with beautiful internal reflections, are nestled on a plate of pale pink to cream coloured Dolomite crystals.
