Baryte on Dolomite
This iconic Baryte on Dolomite from Frizington in West Cumbria is a superb size for display, and really does highlight the sheer quality of the magnificent sword-like bladed Baryte crystals for which the West Cumberland Iron Field became so famous worldwide. At 9.1 cm tall, by 5.3 cm wide, the cluster of a least four parallel orthorhombic cream to grey Baryte crystals make a real statement from the front, yet from the rear, they rise up above a sculptural cluster of domed aggregates of white pearlescent saddle-shaped curved rhombic Dolomite crystals in the classic West Cumbrian association. Sitting naturally for display the base of the specimen cuts across the cleaved base of the Baryte crystals, but it is their upper terminations that are key here. On both sides (front or back) the Baryte crystals are really well formed and have just slight edge wear commensurate with age - many specimens like this were collected during the late 1800s. An internal cleavage line can be seen running through the Baryte crystals but there is no evidence that it has been repaired. Ex Martin Kershaw Collection.
