We have all seen the regular elongated, sharply terminated blue sapphires from the Sri Lankan gem deposits. They mostly tend to be rolled and rounded. Sharp crystals are already uncommon. Here, we have a sharp crystal that is the weirdest combination of forms we have seen in a sapphire, with one side being "normal" and the other end showing a dramatic twin of totally different crystal habit and style, and yet conjoined in the middle! It is hard to fathom how such a crystal may have formed. While we have seen twins, we have never seen one like this, as if it is birthed from the hexagonal root crystal. This is a sharp, complete piece and a floater all around. If you want a dramatic sapphire for any thumbnail suite of gem crystals, this is the one - for form and shape, it simply leaps out. Alex displayed this, twin upwards as a“fishtail” twinned floater crystal. Note this has not been "rolled" and would have come from a hard rock deposit, not a stream alluvial deposit, as most Sri Lankan corundums - hence the sharpness.
