    Overview

    Tetikana—more commonly standardized in mineral databases as Tetikanana (Tetikana)—is a small but surprisingly important collector locality just outside Ambatofinandrahana in Madagascar’s central highlands. It is not a great pegmatite quarry, a commercial rare-earth mine, or a broad district name masquerading as a locality. Its fame rests on a much narrower thing: a pocket occurrence in igneous rock that produced some of the most distinctive Malagasy hematite specimens known, especially platy, jet-black to chrome-silver hematite growing epitactically on rutile. The known species list is almost austere—hematite, rutile, and quartz—but the crystallography is anything but plain. The best pieces show sharp, thin, hexagonal-to-triangular hematite plates perched on or overgrowing rutile prisms, with metallic mirror luster, beveled margins, triangular striation patterns, and a geometry that immediately separates them from ordinary massive or micaceous hematite.

    The locality sits in the wider Ambatofinandrahana mineral province, a region better known geologically for alkaline to peralkaline magmatism, rare-earth mineralization, Itremo Group metasediments, and nearby marble, quartzite, pegmatite, and REE occurrences. Tetikana’s hematites, however, should be treated as a specimen-pocket occurrence rather than as a normal Ambatofinandrahana rare-earth ore deposit. The published descriptions place the specimen production in a small zone of pockets in igneous rocks near the village, where rutile supplied the crystallographic substrate for the hematite. That combination—good crystal form, limited production, and a reverse-style hematite-on-rutile epitaxy of real crystallographic interest—makes Tetikana a locality that serious hematite and epitaxy collectors recognize well out of proportion to its physical size.

    Historically, the locality broke into the specimen market in the mid-2000s through finds associated with Laurent Thomas and Polychrom France, then reappeared in collector attention with a small 2023 production of brilliantly lustrous free-standing hematite plates and groups. The two generations of market material have different collecting personalities: the 2005 material is most prized when it preserves the hematite-rutile relationship, while the 2023 material is sought for sharp, Alpine-looking, mirror-bright plates that can resemble miniature Swiss hematite roses but carry a very different Malagasy locality story.

    Tetikana is recorded as a small quarry locality close to the village of Tetikanana, about 3 km from the town of Ambatofinandrahana in the Amoron’i Mania Region of central Madagascar. The coordinates published for the locality are 20° 34' 23'' S, 46° 49' 28'' E, placing it on the highland terrain south-southeast of Ambatofinandrahana. The spelling is worth noting because specimen labels vary: Tetikana, Tetikanana, and occasionally broader labels such as “Ambatofinandrahana” or “Ambatofinandrahana-Mandrosonoro” have all appeared in the collecting literature and trade. For a serious label, “Tetikanana (Tetikana), Ambatofinandrahana Commune, Ambatofinandrahana District, Amoron’i Mania, Madagascar” is the most precise form.

    The deposit type, in specimen terms, is a pocket occurrence for hematite-rutile epitaxy in igneous rock. It is not documented as a large-scale iron ore deposit, and there is no published evidence that Tetikana itself was operated as an industrial hematite mine. The important “ore bodies” for collectors were instead small cavities and floaters within a limited pocket zone, where rutile crystals and hematite plates developed together. The classic 2005 production consisted of lustrous hematite overgrowths on rutile, with specimens reported up to about 9 cm, along with highly lustrous jet-black hematite plates, some of them found loose as floaters in pockets.

    Regionally, Ambatofinandrahana lies within a geologically complex part of central Madagascar where Paleoproterozoic Itremo Group metasediments, older orthogneiss and metagabbro, and Neoproterozoic to Pan-African alkaline to peralkaline intrusions are all important. Published work on nearby bastnaesite and monazite deposits describes syenite and granite of the Ambalavao suite intruding the Itremo Group and Imorona-Itsindro suite rocks, with later hydrothermal alteration producing rare-earth mineralization in several Ambatofinandrahana prospects. That broader context helps explain why the district is mineralogically lively, but the Tetikana hematite locality should still be understood on its own terms: a small igneous-rock pocket occurrence whose importance is crystallographic and aesthetic rather than tonnage-based.

    The best-documented specimen mining episode was the 2005 find exploited by French prospector Laurent Thomas, associated with Polychrom France. Those specimens reached the European show circuit by 2006, appearing at Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and Munich. Reports from the period make clear that production was limited: roughly 50 specimens were recovered from the small pocket zone, and by the time the material reached Munich only a handful of undamaged thumbnails were still being offered by the finder. A later small production, described as from 2023, brought fresh loose hematite plates and miniature groups into the market through The Arkenstone; these were not a new locality, but a renewed find from the same named occurrence.

    Collecting access today should be treated as uncertain and not public. The locality is small, the known pocket zone has repeatedly been described as exhausted or one-time in nature, and Madagascar mineral localities generally require local permission, land access, and legal mineral rights before collecting. For most collectors, Tetikana is a specimen-market locality rather than a practical field-collecting destination. Good locality data, old labels, and a clear distinction between “Tetikana/Tetikanana” and the broader Ambatofinandrahana district add real value to specimens.

    Notable Minerals

    Hematite

    Tetikana hematite is prized for sharp, thin, platy crystals with hexagonal to triangular outlines, metallic black to chrome-silver color, and mirror-like luster. The classic 2005 pieces are the most mineralogically distinctive: hematite plates grow epitactically on rutile prisms, in some cases with the hematite capping one end of the rutile so neatly that early show observers compared them to tiny stop signs. Published descriptions note lustrous overgrowths on rutile to about 9 cm overall, while the later 2023 material is typically thumbnail to miniature size, commonly 2 to nearly 4 cm across, with razor-edged, lightly striated plates, subparallel groupings, and occasional rosette-like development. Top pieces from Tetikana are judged by undamaged beveled edges, clean faces, strong triangular striation patterns, obvious rutile association where present, and that unusually bright reflective luster; ordinary examples tend to show basal contacting, peripheral nicks, scuffed faces, or less convincing hematite-rutile relationships.

    The confirmed mineral list for Tetikana is short: hematite, rutile, and quartz. Rutile is the critical associate, because the locality’s classic significance lies in hematite growing on rutile rather than the more familiar collector association of rutile growing on hematite. Quartz is documented but has not been the basis of Tetikana’s reputation. No type-locality mineral is currently documented from Tetikana proper, which is important because the broader Ambatofinandrahana District contains several famous and rare-species localities that can easily blur labels if handled carelessly.

    Collector Notes

    The main authenticity issue with Tetikana specimens is not treatment but locality precision. Fine metallic hematite plates can look superficially Alpine, and some 2023 Tetikana crystals have explicitly been compared in the trade to Swiss material. A convincing Tetikana label should be supported by style, provenance, and preferably older dealer or collection documentation. The 2005 material should commonly show the hematite-rutile relationship, while the 2023 material is more often a loose, sharp, mirror-bright hematite plate or a tight subparallel group. Specimens labeled only “Madagascar hematite,” “Ambatofinandrahana,” or “Tetikana area” deserve closer scrutiny, especially if the piece lacks rutile or the distinctive sharp platy habit.

    No well-documented systematic fakery or artificial coating specific to Tetikana has been published in the collector literature I found. That said, the extremely reflective surfaces invite normal condition questions: edge nicks, basal contacts, scuffs, pocket rub, small chips along beveled margins, and partial surface fractures are common enough to matter. A small amount of peripheral wear may be acceptable on otherwise strong examples, but top value belongs to complete, crisp plates with clean faces and intact alternating edges. On hematite-on-rutile specimens, the junction between the two species should be examined carefully under magnification; glued repairs, breaks through rutile prisms, or suspiciously mismatched terminations would seriously affect desirability.

    Handling is straightforward but should be careful. Hematite is hard enough for display but brittle along thin plate edges, and Tetikana pieces often have knife-like margins only a few millimeters thick. Rutile-bearing pieces can have exposed prismatic supports that are easier to damage than they appear. The locality is not known as a fluorescence locality, and fluorescence should not be expected to contribute value. The value is in crystallography, luster, locality, and condition.

    Market availability is limited but not extinct. The 2005 find was small and quickly dispersed; those pieces, especially undamaged hematite-on-rutile thumbnails and miniatures, are now best considered uncommon to rare. The 2023 find added a small number of sharp hematite plates to the market, with reported retail examples ranging from small dealer pieces in the low hundreds of dollars to premium miniature crystals and larger plates at much higher prices. EarthWonders’ current representation is unusually useful because Tetikana is a locality where comparison shopping by condition, size, and presence or absence of rutile is essential.

    Stories & Field Notes

    The Tetikana story begins quietly, with a small pocket zone in the central highlands, but it became a show-floor curiosity almost immediately because the specimens did something backwards. Collectors already knew Brazilian and Alpine-looking pieces in which golden rutile needles sit on hematite. At Tetikana, the memorable thing was the reverse: hematite sitting on rutile. When the material appeared on the European circuit in 2006, the little specimens were not large, but they were arresting—rutile prisms capped by sharp metallic plates, the two minerals sufficiently well balanced that one show observer called them “little Stop signs.” That phrase has stuck because it captures the visual joke of the best thumbnails: a dark metallic hematite plate, broad and geometric, planted on the end of a reddish rutile support.

    Laurent Thomas of Polychrom France is the name most closely attached to the first important find. The pocket zone was small enough that it never became a continuing mine story; it was a discovery story. Reports from 2006 describe about 50 specimens from the 2005 work, followed by only eight or nine pieces on offer at Munich after earlier sales at Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. The same Munich report says bluntly that the deposit was “kaput” according to Laurent. For a collector, that is the kind of sentence that changes how a thumbnail feels in the hand: not merely a pretty small hematite, but a remnant of a very short-lived occurrence.

    The later market reappearance had its own little drama of recognition. In 2025, Thomas P. Moore saw a group of 11 new thumbnails and miniatures from The Arkenstone, described as a 2023 Tetikana find, and the name rang a faint bell. The pieces were brilliant metallic gray plates, 2 to nearly 4 cm across, some loose and some in tight subparallel groups approaching Swiss-style rosettes. At first glance they could have seemed like a new Malagasy hematite locality, but the old Sainte-Marie account pulled the story back into place: this was the same Tetikana, now correctly spelled Tetikanana in modern references, returning to view after nearly two decades of collector obscurity.
