Jinlong Hill is one of the now-classic Chinese specimen localities of the modern market: a small iron-mineralized hill near Jinlong Xia village, in Longchuan County, Heyuan Prefecture, Guangdong Province, worked not as a great industrial showpiece but as a modest, specimen-producing iron occurrence. Its importance rests on a very distinctive assemblage developed in iron-rich quartz veins: red to orange hematite-included quartz, black to steel-gray bladed hematite and specularite, magnetic mushketovite replacing hematite forms, and a much rarer helvine/“helvite” component that gives the locality a beryllium-silicate surprise out of proportion to its size.
The best Jinlong Hill specimens are instantly recognizable. Slender prismatic quartz crystals rise through, or sit directly on, dark rosettes of bladed iron oxides. The quartz may be colorless, milky, pale pink, orange-red, or brick-red where hematite dusts or penetrates it; the hematite forms lustrous to sublustrous floral sprays, plates, and “iron rose” aggregates. Ordinary pieces are abundant and often battered. Fine pieces have three-dimensional composition, undamaged quartz terminations, strong red color or water-clear contrast, sharply bladed iron-rose bases, and enough matrix to read as a natural pocket specimen rather than a broken plate.

Collectors first learned the locality under several labels, and that confusion still shadows the material. The correct modern collector locality is Jinlong Hill, Longchuan County, Heyuan, Guangdong, China; older or erroneous labels may call it Rushan or Shangping. The most diagnostic pieces combine hematite-colored quartz with black bladed hematite or mushketovite. A hand magnet is useful: some “hematite” roses from Jinlong Hill are actually magnetic magnetite pseudomorphs after hematite, the variety commonly called mushketovite.

Jinlong Hill lies in northeastern Guangdong, in Longchuan County near the Jiangxi border. Collector references place the Jinlong iron mine at or near Jinlong Xia village, close to Shangping town, with access historically described by the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and National Freeway 205 to the county seat at Laolong, then by a muddy road to the mine area. The locality is not a broad mining district in the specimen sense; it is a small hill whose collectible mineralization is concentrated in iron-rich quartz veins and adjacent iron-oxide masses.
The specimen-forming environment is dominated by quartz plus iron oxides. Quartz filled open spaces and fractures while hematite, specular hematite, magnetite, and mushketovite developed as blades, plates, rosettes, and coatings. Red quartz owes its color to hematite inclusions and coatings rather than to a separate red quartz species. In better pieces, the paragenesis is visually legible: an earlier or contemporaneous base of bladed iron oxides forms clustered “roses,” with quartz crystals growing upward or outward, sometimes with later dustings of micro-hematite on quartz faces.
The occurrence has also produced helvine, the manganese member of the helvine group and the species usually meant on older labels reading “helvite.” This is not merely a label curiosity. Jinlong Hill helvine occurs as sharp, dark gray to brownish-black tetrahedra on quartz, sometimes with hematite; on some specimens the crystals may be partly altered or pseudomorphed by manganese oxides. Such pieces are scarce compared with the quartz-hematite combinations and are among the locality’s most mineralogically interesting products.
Mining and specimen recovery are described in collector literature as small-scale work by local farmers in shallow underground workings around the hill. Digging for quartz and iron ore began in the early 1990s, and the locality entered Western collector awareness in the early 2000s, when Jürgen Tron published short locality notes in both Lapis and Rocks & Minerals. By 2006 it was important enough to receive a substantial treatment in Guanghua Liu’s Fine Minerals of China, and Berthold Ottens later covered the locality in his major work on Chinese mineral localities.
Production was never a single famous named “pocket” in the way collectors speak of a great alpine cleft or a pegmatite vug. Instead, Jinlong Hill appears to have yielded repeated vein and cavity recoveries over a number of years. Large quantities of mid-grade quartz-hematite specimens reached the market, which is why the locality is familiar to collectors; but undamaged, well-balanced cabinet pieces remain much less common than the volume of material might suggest. The bladed hematite and mushketovite roses break readily, quartz tips are often bruised, and many large plates were reduced from bigger masses.
Access today should be treated as uncertain and not assumed open to casual foreign field collecting. The locality has been worked by local people and is best approached, if at all, through legitimate local contacts and current permission rather than as a public collecting site. For most collectors, Jinlong Hill is a marketplace locality: specimens appear through Chinese dealers, older Western dealer inventories, auction houses, and collection dispersals.
Jinlong Hill quartz is the locality’s defining display mineral: slender to robust prismatic crystals, commonly a few centimeters long and locally to at least 8 cm in dealer-documented examples, occur as sprays, upright clusters, plates, and occasional doubly terminated crystals on iron-oxide matrix. The color range is unusually important here—water-clear and milky crystals are known, but the most characteristic crystals are pink, orange, red, or brick-red from hematite inclusions and coatings, especially where they rise from black bladed hematite or mushketovite rosettes. Good quartz pieces from Jinlong Hill are judged less by sheer size than by clean terminations, strong red color without dull muddy coating, pleasing separation of crystals, and a natural contrast between glassy quartz and metallic iron roses; ordinary pieces are often crowded, stained, incomplete, or visibly bruised at the tips.
Jinlong Hill hematite occurs chiefly as black, brown-black, silvery-gray, or steel-gray bladed crystals, rose-like aggregates, and specular masses intimately associated with quartz. The classic habit is the “iron rose”: overlapping thin blades grouped into rounded floral clusters that make a dark sculptural base for red or colorless quartz. Luster varies from bright metallic to only moderately lustrous, and the locality’s hematite is not always brilliant; top specimens are those in which the bladed roses remain sharp, uncrushed, and visually distinct, with quartz crystals growing naturally through them rather than merely attached to a broken iron-oxide plate. A complicating point for collectors is that some Jinlong Hill “hematite” roses are magnetic mushketovite—magnetite pseudomorphs after hematite—so the most careful labels distinguish tested hematite from magnetic iron-rose material.
The Jinlong Hill “helvite” of older collector usage is generally treated in modern references as helvine, the Mn-rich helvine-group species, and it is far rarer than the quartz-hematite combination for which the locality is famous. The best documented specimens show sharp tetrahedral crystals, dark gray to brownish-black and commonly under 1 cm on an edge, perched on white to colorless quartz and occasionally accompanied by black bladed hematite. One auctioned specimen carried a single tetrahedron to about 1.6 cm on edge, while other cabinet pieces show multiple tetrahedra around 7–8 mm; some crystals may be partially replaced or coated by manganese oxides, giving a slightly sooty patina. Good Jinlong Hill helvine specimens are those where the tetrahedral form is obvious, the crystal is not merely a dark ambiguous spot on quartz, and the association with quartz or hematite is aesthetically arranged.
Other documented Jinlong Hill minerals include magnetite, mushketovite, goethite, calcite, papierspat calcite associated with quartz and mushketovite, chlorite-group minerals, byssolitic amphibole, manganese oxides, phenakite, and the quartz variety eisenkiesel. Phenakite is the most intriguing rarity on the list because it introduces a second beryllium silicate alongside helvine, but it is not part of the usual cabinet-specimen identity of the locality. Specularite is also recorded, though with some caution in locality listings, and its silvery platy habit blends visually into the broader hematite-magnetite-mushketovite problem that makes careful testing and labeling worthwhile.
Jinlong Hill is a locality where the main collecting challenge is not usually artificial treatment but accurate naming, mineral identification, and condition. Mislabeling is well documented: pieces have circulated as Rushan, Shangping, Jinlong Iron Mine, and Jinlong Hill. Rushan is in Shandong Province and is not the same locality; Shangping is a nearby town name but can be misleading when used as though it were the precise mine locality. The most useful label is “Jinlong Hill, Longchuan Co., Heyuan, Guangdong, China,” with older mine-name variants retained as provenance if they came with the specimen.
A simple magnet test is essential for serious cataloging. Hematite itself is not strongly magnetic, but Jinlong Hill material may include magnetite or mushketovite, a magnetite pseudomorph after hematite. Some specimens sold as “hematite roses” are in fact magnetic iron-rose pseudomorphs. This does not make them less collectible—many collectors prize the mushketovite component—but it should be reflected on the label, especially for a specimen marketed as hematite.
Condition is the decisive value factor. Quartz tips chip easily, especially on the slender red crystals, and the bladed hematite or mushketovite roses are prone to edge bruising and crushed margins. Many large pieces are visually impressive but have missing crystals, broken quartz stems, or abraded hematite blades. Cabinet specimens that are three-dimensional, naturally terminated, and essentially damage-free are significantly scarcer than the overall market abundance suggests.
Color can also mislead the casual buyer. Strong red Jinlong quartz is desirable, but the color should appear as natural hematite inclusion, internal clouding, or surface dusting tied to the iron-oxide association. Overly uniform red-brown coatings that obscure luster are less attractive, and heavy iron staining can hide broken contacts. Cleaning should be conservative; aggressive acid or reductive cleaning may brighten associated quartz but can also change the look of delicate iron-oxide coatings or expose damage.
Helvine/helvite specimens require special scrutiny. The crystals should show recognizable tetrahedral geometry, and dark manganese-oxide pseudomorphing or coating can make identification difficult. Because the species is rare at Jinlong Hill and small relative to the quartz, better pieces are those with obvious, well-positioned tetrahedra rather than merely dark spots on a quartz cluster. Older labels using “helvite” are common; modern relabeling as helvine is usually appropriate when the Jinlong Hill Mn-dominant material is meant.
On the market, ordinary quartz-hematite Jinlong Hill specimens remain available, from thumbnails and small cabinets to large decorative plates. Fine examples—especially balanced red quartz on undamaged iron roses, magnetic mushketovite combinations with strong aesthetics, and helvine-bearing pieces—are much less frequent. Recent auction and dealer records show that attractive small cabinets can range from modest three-figure prices to much higher figures for exceptional, three-dimensional, damage-free pieces, while helvine-bearing examples appear only sporadically.
The Jinlong Hill story is unusually modest for a locality with such a recognizable global footprint. It was not introduced by a state mining combine promoting a spectacular ore body, nor by a single celebrity pocket with a romantic name. Collector literature describes a small hill near Jinlong Xia village, with farmers working small underground mines around it. The route itself became part of the early locality lore: modern transport could bring a visitor by rail and highway to Laolong, the county seat, but the last approach to the mine was still by a muddy road. That detail fits the specimens: sophisticated enough to become international fine-mineral material, but born from a very local, hands-on style of digging.
The early 1990s mark the beginning of digging for both quartz and iron ore, and by the early 2000s the locality had reached European and American collectors. Jürgen Tron’s 2003 notes in Lapis and Rocks & Minerals helped pin the material down at a time when labels were drifting between Jinlong, Rushan, and Shangping. In that period, the specimens must have seemed odd and memorable: not the gemmy fluorites, spessartines, and sulfides then transforming the reputation of Chinese minerals, but red quartz and black iron roses from a small Guangdong hill.
By the 2008 Denver show, Jinlong Hill hematite roses on quartz were visible enough to be photographed and discussed by collectors as a recognizable Chinese occurrence. The most dramatic examples entered museum and major private collections: large, red quartz-and-hematite pieces around 20 to 25 cm are documented in the Terra Mineralia orbit at Freiberg, and a watercolor by the German mineral artist Eberhard Equit depicted a Jinlong Hill quartz on hematite specimen from the Peter Langsdorf collection at actual size, measuring 23.14 x 14.70 cm. That is the arc of Jinlong Hill in miniature: from muddy-road farmer workings to a museum case and a serious mineral artist’s paper.
The helvine finds add a second, quieter story. Most collectors know Jinlong Hill for quartz and iron oxides, yet among the same small-hill material came sharp dark tetrahedra of a beryllium manganese silicate. The run appears to have been limited, remembered in the market as a short early-2000s appearance rather than a continuing supply. Today, when a cabinet specimen with several dark tetrahedra on quartz resurfaces from an old collection, it carries a different kind of excitement from the common red-quartz plates: not the loud red-and-black “classic China” look, but a small mathematical crystal form proving that Jinlong Hill was more mineralogically complex than its signature specimens suggest.
