The Fano Mine is one of the small but disproportionately important gem-pegmatite localities of the Cahuilla Mountain district in Riverside County, California. Collectors usually meet the locality under several older label names—Fano-Simmons, Simmons, Little Blue, Big Pink—but the essentials are the same: a rare-element granitic pegmatite on Little Cahuilla Mountain, historically worked for lithium- and boron-bearing gem minerals and now valued chiefly for aquamarine, beryl, schorl, and quartz specimens. Its position, just north of the famous San Diego County pegmatite belt yet within the rugged San Jacinto–Peninsular Ranges country, gives the mine a special place in California collecting: it belongs to the same early twentieth-century gem rush that made Pala, Mesa Grande, and Ramona famous, but its best specimens are much scarcer.
Fano’s classic assemblage is the language of a lithium-bearing pegmatite: albite, microcline, quartz, muscovite, lepidolite, beryl, aquamarine, elbaite tourmaline, schorl, spodumene including kunzite, amblygonite, cassiterite, columbite-series minerals, and microlite-group material. The best pieces have a distinct southern California look: lightly colored aquamarine prisms with etched or complex edges; pale green to yellow beryl in quartz-albite pegmatite; glossy, ribbed black schorl, sometimes sharply terminated; and smoky to colorless quartz crystals that serve as matrix or companions to tourmaline. Unlike the more prolific tourmaline mines of San Diego County, Fano’s reputation rests on a limited run of memorable pockets rather than sustained commercial abundance.

Historically, the mine mattered early. George F. Kunz recorded the Fano Kunzite-Tourmaline Mining Company in his 1905 California gem bulletin, describing a northwesterly striking pegmatite ledge and listing production of kunzite, tourmaline, beryl, quartz crystals, lepidolite, amblygonite, and mica. Later collectors value Fano at least as much for the rediscoveries of the 1970s and 1980s, when local field collectors and the Gochenour family recovered pockets of aquamarine, quartz, albite, and especially black tourmaline. The finest schorls are not merely “black tourmaline from California”; they are bright, architectural crystals with strong vertical striation, high luster, and in the best examples complete pyramidal terminations.

The Fano Mine is on Little Cahuilla Mountain in the Cahuilla Mining District, Riverside County, California, at approximately 33.60611, -116.78583. The old mine names matter because they appear on specimen labels: Fano Mine, Fano-Simmons Mine, Simmons Mine, Big Pink claim, Little Blue claim, and MS 4800 all refer to the same closely related patented claim group used by collectors for this locality.
Geologically, Fano is a rare-element gem pegmatite occurrence hosted in the crystalline rocks of the northern Peninsular Ranges. Published locality records describe the ore body as a pegmatite dike striking northwest and dipping southwest, with a recorded width of about 2.44 meters in later database summaries. Kunz’s 1905 field description gave the ledge as about five feet wide, with a northwesterly-southeasterly strike and a southwest dip of roughly 17 degrees. The pegmatite was not a broad industrial feldspar quarry; it was a pocket-bearing gem pegmatite, prospected for small concentrations of valuable crystallized minerals along a pay streak.
The mineralization is typical of the southern California lithium-beryllium-boron pegmatites but with its own restricted output. Beryl and aquamarine occur with quartz and albite, while schorl and elbaite represent the tourmaline suite. Lithium minerals recorded from the mine include spodumene, kunzite, lepidolite, and amblygonite. Accessory oxides and rare-element minerals include cassiterite, columbite-series material, columbite-(Mn), and microlite-group minerals. Collectors should understand that many of these species are historical or analytical/locality-record entries rather than common display specimens; the pieces most often recognized on the specimen market are aquamarine, beryl, schorl, quartz, and albite-bearing matrix specimens.
The workings combine early surface cuts, trenches, minor underground openings, and short drifts. Kunz recorded that a tunnel was driven in an attempt to cut the ledge below the summit, but the calculation was off: the tunnel crossed the pegmatite near the surface and then continued to 176 feet before encountering solid blue granite, after which underground work was abandoned and attention shifted back to the surface. Later summaries describe numerous surface cuts and trenches following the pay streak. That history helps explain the patchy production: Fano gave fine pieces when pockets were found, but it was not a continuous source of gem material.
Mining began with Bert Simmons, who discovered the deposit in 1902. The mine was soon associated with E. A. Fano of San Diego, and the Fano Kunzite-Tourmaline Mining Company incorporated during the early gem-mining boom. The Big Pink and Little Blue lode claims were later patented, with the property recorded as private land patented in 1912. Early production reported by Kunz included white and pink kunzite, mostly blue and green tourmaline, beryl of which only a small portion was gem quality, quartz crystals, lepidolite, amblygonite, and mica.
The modern specimen chapter belongs largely to the 1970s and 1980s. The Gochenour family obtained a lease in 1976 and recovered pockets containing quartz and aquamarine as single crystals and matrix specimens, reportedly up to about four inches. In 1981, Bill McGee recovered excellent schorl crystals from the mine, including lustrous crystals up to 12 inches from a pocket represented in the Los Angeles County Museum. The Gochenours then recovered additional black tourmaline pockets in 1982, 1983, and 1984. A June 1982 schorl pocket is especially prized among California collectors for sharply lustrous crystals with pyramidal terminations.
Collecting access today must be treated as closed unless explicit permission is obtained. The Fano claims are private patented land within a National Forest setting, and the old workings include surface cuts and underground openings. Serious collectors should pursue specimens through established collections, dealers, and documented old labels rather than attempting casual field collecting.
Fano aquamarine is valued for rarity first and beauty close behind: the classic crystals are light blue to blue-green beryl prisms, usually miniature to small-cabinet in scale, with the best documented examples in the roughly 3–8 cm range and with some old-time crystals showing complicated, striated, etched, or solution-modified edges rather than the glassy simplicity of Pakistani or Brazilian aquamarine. Matrix associations include quartz, albite, and schorl, and the Gochenour-era pockets of the late 1970s and early 1980s produced quartz-and-aquamarine specimens to about four inches; top pieces are distinguished by complete termination, visible translucency or partial gemminess, attractive sea-blue color, and a believable old California provenance, while ordinary pieces tend to be pale, fractured, or massive beryl with only a suggestion of aquamarine color.
Non-aquamarine beryl from Fano is recorded principally as yellow to pale green beryl in lithia-pegmatite, typically occurring with quartz-albite pegmatite rather than as abundant gemmy crystals; Kunz reported about 250 pounds of beryl from early work but noted that only a small percentage was suitable for gem purposes, which fits the collector market today, where complete, well-shaped crystals with clean hexagonal form and pleasing pale color are far scarcer than rough beryl fragments. The best Fano beryl specimens carry the character of an old California gem mine—crystals embedded in or freed from pegmatite, sometimes with etched surfaces and associated quartz, albite, muscovite, or schorl—while the least desirable examples are merely locality pieces with poor form or ambiguous provenance.
Schorl is the mineral that gives Fano some of its strongest sculptural specimens: lustrous black tourmaline prisms, deeply vertically striated, commonly embedded in white albite or associated with quartz, and in the best pocket material showing complete pyramidal terminations rather than broken, splintery ends. The most important finds were made during the modern collecting period: Bill McGee’s 1981 recovery included crystals reported up to 12 inches, followed by Gochenour pockets in 1982, 1983, and 1984, with the June 1982 pocket especially remembered for superb terminated crystals. Fine Fano schorl is separated from ordinary black tourmaline by luster, termination, lack of bruising along prism edges, and matrix balance; a glossy 5 cm crystal on albite or a dramatic schorl-on-quartz matrix can be far more desirable than a larger but battered loose prism.
Quartz from Fano is both a specimen species and a stage for the mine’s better tourmaline and beryl: early mining records noted the sale of about 200 pounds of fine quartz crystals, and later records describe substantial production of fine crystals from the lithia pegmatite. Collector-grade examples include colorless to pale smoky crystals, sometimes doubly terminated and sometimes carrying schorl, albite, or beryl associations; Mineralogical Record indexing specifically notes pale smoky crystals to about 2 cm from the Fano-Simmons mine, while museum-style matrix specimens show that larger quartz crystals could form the structural backbone for schorl groups. The best quartz pieces are clean, complete, and contextual—quartz with sharp schorl or aquamarine is far more characteristic and desirable than isolated, unprovenanced quartz.
Other documented minerals from Fano include albite, amblygonite, cassiterite, columbite-series minerals including columbite-(Mn), elbaite and colored tourmaline varieties historically described as indicolite, rubellite, and verdelite, garnet-group material, lepidolite, mica-group minerals, microcline, microlite-group minerals, muscovite, spodumene, and kunzite. Among these, columbite-(Mn) is a notable rarity: one locality description records Ta-rich, Mn-rich, Fe-poor material occurring as fan-shaped masses of radiating crystals up to about 7.5 cm in an albite-quartz mixture. Fano is not chiefly collected as a type-locality suite; it is collected as a rare and historically important California gem-pegmatite suite with a few exceptional pockets.
The main authenticity issue with Fano specimens is not a known epidemic of fabricated pieces, but locality confidence. Labels may read Fano, Fano-Simmons, Simmons, Big Pink, or Little Blue, and older San Diego collections sometimes group Riverside County pegmatites loosely with “San Diego” gem localities because of the collecting network and proximity to the San Diego County mines. For aquamarine and beryl, insist on a chain of provenance when possible—old Larson, Gochenour, Ordway, Reynolds, or other recognized southern California collection history adds real value. A generic “California aquamarine” label should not be upgraded to Fano without supporting evidence.
Condition is critical. Fano aquamarine commonly shows natural etching, solution rounding, clay-filled cracks, and edge complexity; these are not automatically damage, but fresh bruises, chips on terminations, and repaired breaks are value-changing. Beryl crystals can be fractured internally and only partly gemmy. Schorl is harder than many collectors expect but still prone to edge bruising, broken terminations, and cleaving along old fractures, especially in long loose prisms. Matrix specimens should be checked for repaired schorl, stabilized albite, and contact points hidden by stands or old mounting.
Treatments are not a major theme for Fano display specimens. Aquamarine in the general gem trade is often heated to improve blue color, but Fano mineral specimens are prized more for locality, form, and provenance than for cut-stone color; heating a specimen would be both unlikely and destructive to collector value. Cleaning is more relevant: old pocket clay and iron staining can be part of the specimen’s history, and aggressive acid cleaning may brighten quartz or albite while stripping away the antique character collectors expect from early Fano material.
Market availability is limited. Small schorls, pale beryls, and quartz-schorl pieces appear occasionally, but convincing aquamarine from Fano is scarce and often sells on provenance. The best pieces are usually recycled from old southern California collections rather than new production. In a market full of brilliant aquamarines from Pakistan, Brazil, Namibia, and China, Fano’s appeal is different: a fine piece is a California classic, not a commodity aquamarine.
Bert Simmons entered the story at the perfect moment. Southern California was in the middle of a gem rush, with Pala, Mesa Grande, and the Ramona country producing tourmaline, kunzite, and beryl that attracted national attention. In 1902 Simmons found the Fano-Simmons deposit, and by the following year the property had passed into the orbit of E. A. Fano of San Diego. The names of the claims—Big Pink and Little Blue—sound almost too convenient for a gem mine, but they are part of the real mining record and capture the ambition of the place: colored tourmaline, kunzite, and beryl in the rugged country north of the better-known San Diego pegmatites.
Kunz’s 1905 account preserves one of the better early mining episodes. After some surface work, the miners started a tunnel 300 feet below the summit, intending to cut the ledge at depth. The calculation was wrong. The tunnel crossed the pegmatite only about 20 feet from the surface, but the crew kept driving until the heading reached 176 feet and solid blue granite. That was enough. The tunnel was abandoned, and the work returned to the surface cuts where the actual pocket material could be followed.
The early production figures are striking because they show both promise and frustration. Kunz recorded 25 pounds of white kunzite, 1 pound of pink kunzite, 25 pounds of tourmaline of all classes, about 250 pounds of beryl, 200 pounds of fine quartz crystals, about a ton of lepidolite, and 30 or 40 pounds of amblygonite. Yet he also noted that only about five percent of the beryl was usable for gem purposes. Fano was not a mine that gave up treasure evenly; it rewarded pockets, punished dead work, and left behind a paper trail full of tantalizing numbers.
The modern collecting story is just as important. In 1976 the Gochenour family obtained a lease on the Fano-Simmons mine and began working the old pegmatite ground. Their first notable recoveries included pockets of quartz and aquamarine, as both single crystals and matrix specimens, with pieces reaching roughly four inches. Then came the black tourmaline. In 1981 Bill McGee recovered excellent schorl crystals from the mine, including lustrous crystals up to 12 inches long from a pocket represented in the Los Angeles County Museum. The Gochenours followed with three more black-tourmaline pockets in 1982, 1983, and 1984.
One June 1982 pocket became a quiet legend among California collectors. Specimens from it show why Fano schorl is not merely a locality curiosity: the crystals are glossy, sharply ribbed, and capped by clean pyramidal terminations. A documented 6.8 cm crystal from that pocket, formerly in the Jaime Bird collection, has exactly the look collectors want—black, bright, architectural, and unmistakably pocket-grown. These crystals have not been common on the market since, which is why even modest-sized examples with good terminations are chased so aggressively by specialists in California pegmatites.
