Emerald
Emerald crystal, 3.5 cm, the best crystal from a short-lived private mining endeavor in 2012–2014 near Muji Village, Tashikrgan, Kashi, Xinjiang Province, China. It was purchased from the miner, whose operation there (despite a valid license from the military governance) has been shut down because of political problems in Xinjiang that resulted in the prohibition of the private use of mining tools and dynamite. This locality, near the old Silk Road, might be the lost “Last Empress CiXi’s emerald mine”; the color is a close match with documented pre-1900 Chinese-origin emerald gems, the exact source of which was lost during the Chinese Revolution. Photographer: Joe Budd.
