With its high luster, great form and color, and inherent gemminess, Dioptase is one of Tsumeb's signature minerals, and as a species, probably the world's best. This thumbnail features a very fine, 1.8 cm dioptase crystal, lustrous and as intensely green as you would expect. Perched right along the edge of the matrix, it is gemmy and flashy, and the bit of contacting on the back has no effect on the presentation side. This large crystal is accompanied by a straw-colored, 5 mm wulfenite, several 3 mm dioptase gems, a layer of drusy calcite (?), and small amounts of green duftite (?). It is a fine, aesthetic piece with great mineral interest.
