Magnetite with ANTIGORITE
This excellent small cabinet specimen of Magnetite with Antigorite is from the Tilly Foster Iron mine at Brewster in Putnam County, New York, USA. The Tilly Foster Iron mine was the subject of a special issue of the Mineralogical Record; Vol. 47, No. 6, November-December 2016, by Wendell E. Wilson and Stephen L. Nightingale. The Magnetite forms as several large blocky, dull lead grey crystals over a matrix of Antigorite, a laminated mineral within the phyllosilicate serpentine group. The Tilly Foster Iron mine worked a large magnetite deposit which was discovered in 1810. The mine operated until 1897, but was closed following a tragic accident in which 13 miners were killed in a rock slide. This is a fine specimen from from this famous mine in New York state.
