The ArkenstoneFeatured
For a simple copper oxide, Cuprite can present itself in interesting and attractive ways with different crystallography, usually octahedral and sometimes cubic. This fine thumbnail is a heavily modified cuboctahedron with stepped fancy edges showing bevelled faces; and has a high, submetallic luster and the classic, deep, cherry-red color that benefits from enhanced lighting to really bring out the translucence. As to habit, the modifications are complex and unusual. The square faces are smooth and lustrous, and the recessed faces in between create the immediate impression of being etched, but on the current surface they aren't! If you follow the small, shiny steps around, they actually overlap the edges of the square faces. This surprising secondary overgrowth is both uncommon and intriguing, and it adds a whole nother layer of interest. There is more here than meets the eye. Already aesthetic, there are even a few clusters of mm-size white crystals (perhaps Cerussite?) scattered about. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - PTN22.
