Tucson, Arizona, USAHemerdon mine at Sparkwell near Plympton, Devon, is a mine whose name seems as if it is always evolving! Under the current ownership its called Drakelands mine and in the past was Hemerdon Bal. This was commonly misinterpreted with specimens being labelled 'Hemerdon Ball'. But names aside, this lairage opencast tungsten mine has produced so many wonderful specimens amongst which is the hydrated iron arsenate, Scorodite. This small cabinet specimen contains an approximately 3 x 2 cm area rich in teal blue Scorodite crystals of between 2 and 3 mm filling a shallow open cavity in a coarse granite pegmatite. Three part smoky Quartz crystals surround the cavity, one of which is terminated, together with several black to clove brown Cassiterite crystals. A great example of Scorodite from Hemerdon mine.
