This magnificent group of Smoky Quartz crystals is known to be from Switzerland although its specific locality is unrecorded. Covering a granular plate of typical Alpine matrix, several deep chocolate brown Smoky Quartz crystals lie across an olive green Chloritized Feldspar and Quartz matrix, the largest and most showy crystal measuring 14 cm long and 5.5 cm in cross section. This crystal is double terminated with one termination bifurcating into two peaks. The opposite termination is part-obscured by a smaller Smoky Quartz which crosses at an angle. A 4.5 cm long Smoky Quartz at one end projects upwards from the matrix and displays a fine Dauphin' termination. Each Quartz prism has transparent sides and terminations which become translucent then opaque in their centres. The matrix is mainly coated with small Adularia crystals, a variety of potassium Feldspar. This wonderful specimen will make a very fine display piece.
