Intense amber-coloured Baryte crystals from the Pöhla-Tellerhäuser mine in Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany are one of the great examples of Baryte crystal form and a much sought after German classic. This famous mine closed in 1991 after which the only specimens seen came from releases from collections. Larger cabinet-sized display specimens in top condition now command seriously high prices but this miniature specimen provides a great, slightly more affordable example of the rich colour and classic wedge-shaped form always associated with this mine. What appears to be a single, 3.1 cm long Baryte crystal resting flat upon a bed of Quartz crystals is actually two crystals grown as an extension of each other (1.9 and 1.5 cm). Both are missing part of one end (the ends joining in the centre) but are terminated at their other end and are glassy and intensely coloured. There are a few other 'nibbles' around these crystals, but they present a very good example of this classic, and if they were pristine the price would be considerably more. Furthermore, the rear of the 'bed' of Quartz crystals is a perfect corner epimorph of a cube of Fluorite which was once underneath the layer of Quartz.
