Well-known for gem crystals, the Jos Plateau in Nigeria is probably most famous for its really well-crystallized colourless Topaz crystals as well as rarer bi-colour Elbaite tourmaline crystals. Usually individual, off-matrix crystals, these are probably from detrital deposits rather than hard-rock mining. This thumbnail-sized individual colourless transparent Topaz crystal displays a mesmerizing series of crystal faces, far more complex than many 'simple' Topaz crystals. Cleaved across its base, these faces cover the top half of the crystal and although there is some occasional tiny chipping to the sharp edges, the faces are usually far more 'worn' in crystals from these alluvial-type deposits. A lovely complexly crystallized Topaz from this famous region.
