A gloriously saturated crystal of tanzanite showing blue and purple, with red overtones when lit from below. The crystal is so gemmy, that at the angle it is photographed, the gem blue color washes out the purple as it stands vertically in our lighting studio. However, if you turn the piece 90 degrees and hold it sideways against a computer screen (polarized light), it really goes a vivid and strong purple with no backlighting needed. Unlike most tanzanites, this gem termination simply looks blue from all sides as it stands, until you take it in your hands and move it around to see the purple come out on one axis. Note the little accent of two tiny calcite crystals atop! Obtained directly from sources in Tanzania at the time, early 2000s. Long in IKONS book author Wayne Thompson's personal collection of Miniatures/Thumbnails built with his daughter, Stevia, when she was young. Laszlo Kupi photos. 14.85 grams
