Viitaniemiite with Elbaite Tourmaline
A cute miniature featuring a fine, doubly terminated, parallel grouping of viitaniemiite crystals accented by a few elbaite tourmaline crystals from a complex pegmatite at Chhappu, Pakistan. Viitaniemiite is a complex sodium-calcium-manganese-aluminum phosphate and is a secondary phosphate formed by the alteration of primary pegmatite phosphates like triphylite-lithiophilite and amblygonite-montebrasite by late stage pegmatite fluids. This attractive miniature has what could be interpreted as three viitaniemiite crystals in tight parallel and doubly terminated growth. The crystals in the parallel grouping are from 2.5 to 4.2 cm in size and are translucent, prismatic with a satin luster. There are a few, almost lime-green, translucent to transparent, lightly striated prisms of singly terminated tourmaline crystals on the backside. The viitaniemiite crystals are in excellent condition. A very fine and elegant miniature example from this 2024 find.
