Smoky Quartz, Amethyst
Smoky quartz and amethyst, 14 cm, from the Pohndorf mine, Toll Mountain, Jefferson County, Montana. Fine crystals of amethyst with smoky or colorless quartz were discovered in Jefferson County, 22 miles southeast of Butte, in 1900 by August P. Pohndorf (1866–1939). The smoky quartz crystals are so heavily included with needles of black tourmaline that they are opaque, but the amethyst is free from such inclusions. Pohndorf reported finding smoky quartz crystals to 3 feet in length (Kunz, 1901).
