Huanzala pyrite produces a variety of crystal forms. Huanzala pyrite specimens are collected for their crystal forms and combinations. Pieces displaying multiple crystal habits in a single specimen are sought after - cubes modified by pyritohedral faces create a striated appearance. The Huanzala Mine is operated by Cia. Minera Santa Luisa and owned by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. (Japan), with a capacity of 1,200 tons/day as a lead-zinc mine. In addition to pyrite, the mine produces specimens of fluorite, sphalerite, galena, quartz, calcite, and other minerals.
Modern mining at Huanzala began in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, collectors began to appreciate Huanzala's pyrite specimens. The mine gained international recognition in the 1970s and 1980s when dealers began bringing specimens to mineral shows in Tucson and Munich, as documented in mineralogical literature.
The mine continues to produce pyrite specimens. The mine's elevation and remote location present logistical challenges - specimens must be carefully packed and transported. Since January 2020, Gemrock Peru S.A.C. has held exclusive rights for the extraction and global sale of pyrite from the Huanzala mine, working to formalize pyrite as an official product of the mine. The ongoing production from the mine continues to provide specimens to the mineral collecting community.
