Fine cluster of metallic semi lustrous stephanite crystals from this famous locality. Some of the crystals measure to 0.6 cm in size. An outstanding thumbnail that is in really good condition. The specimen comes with a previous collection label dating this to the 1970s. This is shown at the end of the video.
Ehrenfriedersdorf, located in the Ore Mountains of Saxony, Germany, has a rich mining history that began with surface placer operations around 1230, followed by extensive underground vein mining primarily targeting tin. After centuries of intermittent operations, technological modernizations, and post-World War II state-run extraction, commercial mining at the Sauberg deposit finally ceased on October 3, 1990, due to economic factors rather than depleted reserves. Geologically, the area is situated within the Variscan crystalline basement of the Erzgebirge, characterized by complex metamorphic rock formations intruded by post-magmatic tin-bearing granite bodies, greisenized zones, and hydrothermal vein structures famous for a diverse assemblage of distinct minerals.
