Baryte with Calcite
Meikle mine in northern Nevada is a gold mine, but it is perhaps more famous for its golden Baryte crystals. The mine itself only opened in the mid-1990s but very rapidly it was the discovery of world class Baryte crystals in large vugs that brought the mine to the attention of the world of mineral collectors. Many of the best Baryte specimens were collected during the late 1990s and are world famous for their bright reflectivity and gemmy, transparent core. This large cabinet display specimen is a spectacular example, featuring the most gemmy, golden, tabular to bladed Baryte crystals, to over 4 cm in length, perched upon a bed of cream coloured bladed Calcite. We don't have the specific details of when, or where this specimen was found in the mine, but photographs in Martin Jensen's fabulously illustrated article on this discovery in the Mineralogical Record (Vol. 30, no. 3) in 1999, show similar combinations of golden baryte on bladed Calcite from the 373-metre level in the mine. As with many gemmy minerals its appearance is much brighter than can be captured in photographs, but this really is a stunning Baryte specimen. It comes from one of the most highly regarded private collections in Germany.
