Originally located in 1879, which inspired its distinct name, the property saw active commercial extraction of oxidized metal ores throughout much of the early to mid-twentieth century. Beyond its historic metal production, the 79 Mine became legendary among mineral collectors for yielding world-class specimens of secondary minerals from its rich oxidation zones and underground collapse caverns. Mining operations and specimen recovery efforts produced exquisite, brightly colored examples of wulfenite, aurichalcite, smithsonite, and hemimorphite, making the location one of Arizona's most celebrated historic mineral localities.
