An excellent cabinet example of this Michigan classic. Yellow mostly sharp formed crystals of sulfur measuring to 2.7 cm in height scattered across the top of matrix. These are in good condition with just slight damage present to a few minor crystals close to the matrix. The crystals are slightly translucent and quite lustrous. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark, he collected the piece in July, 1999.Located in Monroe County, Michigan, the Maybee Quarry (historically known as the Woolmith or Scofield Quarry) is a famous aggregate mining operation that exposes Devonian dolostones and limestones of the Michigan Basin. Commercial limestone extraction began in the late 19th century and continued under various operators, yielding crushed stone while inadvertently exposing rich mineralized cavities (vugs) within the sedimentary strata. The locality is renowned among mineral collectors and museums for producing world-class specimens of crystallized native sulfur. These bright yellow, translucent-to-transparent sulfur crystals formed through secondary hydrothermal or biogeochemical processes, often occurring as sharp, lustrous crystals perched on matrix alongside white or pale blue celestine, calcite, and fluorite.
