A bright golden sharply formed lustrous crystal of pyrite is acting as matrix for a tennantite crystal 2.0 cm across, this coated with micro crystals of metallic lautite. An excellent example for this rare mineral. In great condition. The Mundo Nuevo Mine, located near Huamachuco in the La Libertad Department of Peru, is a famous tungsten-base metal deposit situated high in the Andes Mountains. Geologically, the region features rich hydrothermal vein systems hosted within Cretaceous sedimentary structures and Tertiary intrusive rocks, producing exceptional tungsten, copper, and sulfide mineralization. Historically operated for commercial tungsten extraction, the underground workings, such as the El Gallito adit, became renowned among mineral collectors for yielding world-class cabinet specimens. Among its notable occurrences, Mundo Nuevo is one of the few localities globally that produces lautite, a rare copper arsenic sulfide mineral. Collectors highly value these rare lautite specimens, which typically form metallic, dark grey to reddish-grey flattened crystals or radiating rosettes matrix-hosted alongside tennantite, quartz, and huebnerite.
