Although famous for intense neon-pink Cobaltoan Dolomite, this radiant specimen from the Kakanda deposit in Kambove District, DR Congo is actually Cobaltoan Calcite as given away under magnification. Its intensity in colour occurs in the very final stages of its crystal growth, in the outer layer, beneath which the Calcite is a rather duller cream colour. Its shimmering, almost pearlescent lustre, is not actually so, but is an affect produced by many small stepped glassy crystal faces covering the display surface. A few of the crystals have their tips missing, showing how their colour is zoned internally. A couple of dark green Primary Malachite crystals sit on the neon pink Calcite in a cavity towards one end.
