Very fine cluster of the distinctive grape-juice-colored purple Fluorites from the Dongposhan Mine in Hunan, China. An unusual style of Fluorite, these trickled out from this older district about 2005-2010 if i recall. The focal point of this small-cabinet cluster is a wonderful 2.6 cm cuboctahedron, surrounded along the lower sides by smaller cuboctahedrons. This major crystal, as with the smaller ones, is gemmy and deep purple, and glows eerily when backlit. The form of this larger crystal is perfectly proportioned, as if it was faceted, and the faces vary from glassy to textured—a classic preferential effect. Under LW, there are zones within the crystal that fluoresce a deep, subdued red, which creates an unexpected and remarkable look. This is an attractive, high-quality example for this particular find and was formerly in the small-cabinet-sized China specimens collection of Ken Roberts. Ken went to China before me, and made many trips there in the late 1990s into the mid 2000s, searching for minerals from local dealers and miners. He kept a choice collection of small-cabinet specimens, much of which sold to us over the years.
