Attractive light purple sparkling crystals of quartz, the variety often called amethyst, averaging 0.2 cm in size across the top of a green crystallized fluorite matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. This was collected in 2010 by Tim Dingman. The Nancy Hanks Mine, located in Nancy Hanks Gulch within Unaweep Canyon, Mesa County, Colorado, originated during the late nineteenth-century regional copper rush and later saw sporadic evaluation for fluorspar. Geologically, the site is situated in a unique landscape where mineralized fissure veins and fracture systems cut through ancient Precambrian crystalline rocks—primarily granite and gneiss—that are unconformably overlain by younger sedimentary layers. Originally developed via shafts and tunnels for base and precious metal extraction, the mine and its surrounding district later gained recognition among mineral collectors for producing fine specimens of quartz (amethyst), and sea-green fluorite.
