This is a beautiful, gemmy, colorless Topaz crystal from Afghanistan. This is a thumbnail specimen, but it could also be faceted into a beautiful gemstone.

Topaz has one of the highest hardnesses of any natural mineral at 8.5. It often forms in the final stages of magma crystallization in fluorine- and water-rich pegmatites. Its extremely high melting point makes it suitable for use as furnace linings in factories and its high hardness, thermal properties, and piezoelectric properties also allows it to be used in specialized optical equipment and radiation detectors like thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) to measure gamma and x-ray radiation.

Topaz has also been a highly valued gemstone for thousands of years. Its high hardness, again, makes it one of the best choices for any kind of jewelry. Topaz is commonly colorless, but it can also be blue. Blue topaz is one of the highest valued colors of topaz due to its rarity. Frequently, colorless to brown topaz is irradiated and heated to turn it blue, and most blue topaz gemstones are not naturally blue.
