Tucson, Arizona, USAAlthough Hagendorf North Pegmatite is the Type Locality for the rare hydrated iron manganese phosphate species, Phosphoferrite, the better crystals were found across the road at Hagendorf South Pegmatite. This excellent toenail-sized specimen from the Hagendorf South Pegmatite features two very well-formed wedge-shaped Phosphoferrite crystals, reaching 4 mm and 2 mm across, and showing flashes of amber-coloured internal reflections. The larger of the two crystals has deep blue bladed Vivianite crystals resting alongside it and other opaque dark coloured wedge-shaped microcrystals could well be Phosphoferrite altered to Kryzhanovskite. A lovely example of this rarely seen phosphate species from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
