Devilline
Mining of the copper-rich deposits around 'pania Dolina in Slovakia has spanned at least 1,000 years and evidence now suggests mining of some kind took place during Neolithic times. Copper vein mineralisation covers an area of approximately 46 square km and the area is known to produce more than 80 mineral species. This impressive old-time specimen is a beautifully crystallised Devilline, a complex calcium-copper sulphate, occurring here as a flowstone-type deposit. Almost entirely coating a plate of strongly foliated granular Quartz, the Devilline forms drusy repeated waves of earthy peppermint, sea-green, aquamarine and electric metallic turquoise. Where crystalline, the colour intensifies to vivid greenish-blues and silvery-turquoise. Crystalline areas, of which there are many, form 1 to 2 mm laths in fanned booklets and clustered rosettes. A beautiful specimen of Devilline, displayable form either side, with a splendid old card label from the collection of Dr C.A. Martius.
