Cinnabar
A striking example of botryoidal, bright red cinnabar richly covering the top of a quartz matrix, this specimen from Cavnic, Romania presents one of the most vivid and collectible cinnabar forms known. The deep red, rounded crystals are exceptionally colorful and aesthetically dramatic, making this a highly desirable piece for connoisseurs of classic European minerals. The Cavnic mining district, located in Maramures County, has been mined since the 18th century for its rich polymetallic veins of mercury, silver, and associated sulfides. Cinnabar from this region, long prized for its intense red color and rarity, was historically sought by European collectors and remains extremely uncommon today, especially in such rich, attractive groups. This specimen is preserved with an antique label, as shown at the end of the video, dating it to the early 20th century, if not earlier, providing both provenance and historical significance. Combining vivid color, rarity, and historical heritage, this Cavnic cinnabar represents a truly exceptional addition to any fine mineral collection.
