Topaz (var. Imperial) on oxidized goethite-kaolinite-quartz, 14.5 cm, from Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Repaired in one place with very minor restorations. Ex Rob Lavinsky and Gene Meieran collections; Gene purchased this specimen in Brazil in 1998, through Pierre Laville. We saw it for the very first time without base lighting and, in our early inexperience, were going to pass on it. Then one of us lit it up with a flashlight just in time.
