Dioptase is one of Tsumeb's signature species, and when it is found with calcite you have one of Tsumeb's most cherished and beautiful combinations. The dioptase crystals on this thumbnail are nicely scattered across the matrix, with the largest crystal being a full 9 mm tip-to-tip. These are classic for Tsumeb, with super-glassy luster, sharp form, and the dioptases are so gemmy that transmitted light creates fantastic green fire within the deep-green crystals. As dioptases go, the gemminess is much better than average, and spectacular in its own way. Set against the white calcite below, the stunning contrast in color and form makes these great combination pieces the sought-after specimens that they are. The calcite also fluoresces orange, as expected. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - 36648
