BARYTE on Dolomite
This remarkable specimen has some heritage to it, but unfortunately the accompanying A.E. Foote (1846-1895) typed label is succumbing to the ravages of time far worse that the specimen, which is in exceptional condition. What remains of the label, indicates that it was from a numbered catalogue - possibly related to the catalogue he produced in 1876. The remains state "630 B / Heavy / 716. Do / Brown Spa / Ca C + Mg C, / Cumberland, Eng. / A. E. FOOTE, M.D / Philadelphia, Pa." Faintly pencilled down one side side is /93. The specimen is a real juxtaposition. Baryte is a dense mineral, but the thin plate of porous beige-coloured Dolomite is very lightweight, making the overall feel of the specimen much lighter than one might expect. Upon the thin layer of crystallized Dolomite are four of five individual and clustered glossy bladed crystals of cream-coloued Baryte. All are in excellent condition which is testament to the collectors who have looked after it over the past hundred and thirty years or more. The largest Baryte crystal reaches 7.3 cm in length. This is not the most colourful of West Cumbrian Barytes, but it is a classic and is in extremely good condition.
