Jack Halpern bought this exceptional specimen of transparent axinite from dealer and friend Gene Schlepp in the early days of Russian mineral exports, in the 1980s. Pieces were just starting to come out and we thought the flood would continue - but it did not. The truth was that many of them had been collected earlier, and hoarded; and so after the Wall fell there was a surge of old stashes to the market and by the mid 1990s a lot of these "classic Russian minerals" that we thought were contemporary and would come out for decades longer, simply did not. These are a legendary find of the past, and a treasured example of high alpine mineral pockets at their best. Formerly known for decades as ferroaxinite, now renamed as Axinite-Fe, for those who care. Axinite with this size, quality, and luster is almost unique to this mountain location, with few enough exceptions. The piece is particularly lustrous and glassy, super colorful, and nearly pristine all around.
