There is little debate about where the world's most spectacular Axinite-(Fe) crystals came from - Puiva Mount, Saranpaul in Prepolar Ural, Western-Siberia, Russia. About as remote as you can get, this isolated mining region produced, back in the 1980s, staggeringly large and razor sharp bladed triclinic crystals but most did not make it to the worldwide mineral market until the 1990s by which point the mine was in decline. This magnificent specimen features a stunning 5.5 cm tall glassy and gemmy clove-brown Axinite-(Fe) crystal rising up like a shark's fin from an aggregate of smaller Axinite-(Fe) crystals. This crystal presents the textbook crystal form but also displays fascinating 'bubble'-like inclusions of what is most likely Chamosite which I have not seen in any other Axinite worldwide. There are a few very slight 'nicks' to the lower edges of the main crystal, but overall this is an exceptional world-class specimen for this species. Ex Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) Collection.
