This old-timer tourmaline from Betafo, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar is quite a stocky doubly-terminated crystal. Dating from 1958, it was in the collection of Prof. H. Siegmund in Vienna who had it labelled as Dravite. The main body of the crystal is dark olive-brown, translucent, but almost opaque. It displays prominent characteristic vertical striations with either end terminated with very many small individual crystals. The top surface is covered in glassy golden-brown squat crystals and the lower termination by a surface covered with small grey-white glassy to frosted crystals. A few small areas of contact damage on the sides of the prism are possibly where the crystal was attached to the edges of a pocket. A really unusual Madagascan Dravite.
