CHLOROXIPHITE with MENDIPITE Hydrocerussite and Diaboleite
A large and very rich mass of compact fibrous Mendipite, reaching 65 mm in length, forms the core of a Hydrocerussite-lined cavity in black manganese oxides from the famous discoveries at Merehead quarry (also known as Torr Works) during the 1970s. Embedded within the Mendipite is a single, 9 mm long, altered Chloroxiphite crystal, the outside of which is coated in blue Diaboleite. Chloroxiphite is one of those overlooked minerals, known naturally in good crystals from just a very small number of localities in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. This specimen comes with a Mike Brooke collection label and a George Fletcher label, recording that he acquired it in August 1973!
