Description
This large miniature specimen of Zincite is from the all-time classic occurrence of the Franklin Mining District, New Jersey, USA. Remarkably, for a mineral so rare elsewhere, large quantities of this species were found in the orebodies at Franklin, but rarely is it well crystallized. This specimen presents a very large rounded crystal of opaque red-brown Zincite measuring to 3.5 cm partly enclosed and standing out from a white Calcite matrix that fluoresces orange under short wave UV light. A thin veinlet of green fluorescent Willemite is also visible under short wave UV light. Several areas of the Zincite show fractured surfaces which display the typical slightly greasy lustre much better than the smooth rounded edges of the crystal.
