Azurite with Iodargyrite
Surprisingly, large well crystallised specimens of Azurite are remarkably scarce from the mines at Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia. And when I say large, I really mean any crystal much greater than about, say, one centimetre. So this magnificent 2.8 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm crystal is something very special, of intensely dark azure blue and like so many high quality Azurites, appears essentially black. Close inspection however reveals translucent azure blue faces where light is able to penetrate and flashes of electric blue are often seen. The crystal height stated above is a little conservative to convey its probable display face, but viewed from another direction its total height is about 4 cm. The granular textured matrix on which the prism is perched is pervaded with dozens of excellent clove brown translucent Iodargyrite crystals, a rare silver iodide.
