Very good mostly lustrous example for the species and locality, this with two metallic bournonite crystals, the most prominent crystal 1.8 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm in size, set nicely up on matrix with micro crystallized quartz, dolomite, and pyrite. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark who acquired the piece in Mexico in 1978.
Located in the arid mining district of Melchor Ocampo in Zacatecas, Mexico, the historic Noche Buena Mine is hosted within a complex geological setting characterized by hydrothermal veins, intrusive rocks, and carbonate-rich sedimentary formations that produce silver, gold, and diverse base metal sulfide mineralization. Mining in this region dates back centuries to colonial times, driven by prospectors targeting rich polymetallic veins and oxidized ore zones near the surface. Over the decades, underground and small-scale workings yielded an array of impressive sulfide and secondary mineral specimens that drew international attention from mineral collectors. The district remains recognized for its classic Mexican locality pieces, featuring exceptional crystal associations recovered from historical dumps and old subterranean workings.
