There has been a Magnesite mine at Sunk, Hohentauern, Niedere Tauern, Styria, Austria since the 17th century, firstly for decorative stone and then, from the mid-1800s, for refractory Magnesite for furnace linings. Associated with the Magnesite beds are exceptional rhombic and twinned Dolomite crystals, which are amongst the best in the world for the species. This crystallized bed of Dolomite from Sunk is slightly different to the norm, with smaller (up to 1.2 cm across), but distinctive lenticular, to shallow-angled bladed rhombic crystals, white to pale grey in colour and with a slightly silky lustre, covering the surface of a thick bed of Dolomite in clustered groups. These crystals are in excellent condition and at small cabinet-size, the specimen presents very well for display.
