Aquamarine from Shigar Valley, Shigar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Rarely do we see such geometric contrast and structure in a specimen this large of any species, let alone aquamarine from the several-mile-high alpine environment in northern Pakistan that produces much of the world's great aquamarine specimens. This combination, with transparent gem aquamarines perched in a spray on sharp, textbook-quality feldspar crystals for a blue and white contrast, stands out in any showcase as a miracle of Nature. It looks built, or constructed! However, this is natural, shocking in its growth that was made possible in a large open pocket at the time. These pockets later collapse, so when found some repairs are needed to restore it to as it was formed. Usually, that means many repairs and large restorations in a piece this size, but this specimen is miraculously almost pristine, and has lock-fit repairs that are simply trivial in context, given the size. If you see a photo of this piece, you might expect it to be 4–6 inches, given the geometry; but instead it is larger than a basketball. The combination of scale and structure, with sheer quality of those transparent aquamarines, elevates this to among the more elegant of such specimens in this size range, which are usually blocky and heavy with big "sticks" on massive rock matrix. This sculptural piece, on the other hand, is elegant and easy to carry and move, despite the size.
