Demantoid from Antetezambato Demantoid-Topazolite Mine, Diana, Madagascar

World-class demantoids such as these were briefly recovered in 2008–2010 from an obscure area in northern Madagascar (still producing lesser material in limited quantity and quality - but this is the classic older find). This small-cabinet specimen of demantoid garnet from Madagascar is a shocking example of the rare highest level of quality in green demantoid garnets, from Madagascar or anywhere for that matter. It is hard to beat the impact of 1-plus-inch (2.7 cm) deep green crystals with such depth of color and luster. This specimen is a remarkable, rich and balanced piece, from a single pocket of around 2008 that produced some of the best specimens ever seen. The matrix is a fossil coral that has been replaced by microscopic garnet infiltration (by a process called metasomatism), so this is technically a crystallized garnet on a replacement of the fossil coral by garnet. See the 2010 Mineralogical Record articles in Vol. 41, No. 3 for more information on the finds and locality.
