Neat combination specimen from this historic locality, attractive crystals of calcite lustrous and mostly gemmy measuring to 3.0 cm in height set on matrix with pale blue crystals of Celestine to 0.4 cm in size. One of the calcite crystals on the lower right edge of the matrix is cleaved away from the center of the piece. The larger scalenohedral crystal is perfect. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.Pugh Quarry, located near Custar in Wood County, Ohio, exposes Silurian-age dolostone of the Lockport and Salina Groups, which formed in ancient marine environments. The quarry is famous among mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimens of Celestite (often presenting as brilliant blue, well-formed crystals), along with lustrous Brown Calcite, Fluorite, Sphalerite, Pyrite, and Barite, typically lining cavities and fractures within the host rock. Active industrial limestone mining began in the mid-twentieth century, and while commercial operations primarily extract crushed stone, the site achieved legendary status in the amateur mineral collecting community through organized field trips that allowed access to these world-class mineral pockets.
