Rich purple masses throughout matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.Usakos and Karibib are settlements in the Erongo region of Namibia that developed in the early 1900s around railway and regional service hubs, closely tied to the expansion of local mining ventures. The geology of this area is characterized by ancient metamorphic basements and complex granitic pegmatites rich in lithium, tin, and rare elements, alongside major gold deposits like the Navachab mine which opened in 1989 and remains active. While various small-scale historical prospects and colonial-era workings opened and closed throughout the twentieth century, the region's pegmatite-laden terrain continues to be a globally renowned source of diverse mineral species.The heterosite-purpurite series comprises a group of secondary phosphate minerals that form a solid solution series, where heterosite represents the iron-rich end member and purpurite serves as the manganese-rich counterpart. These minerals typically develop through the weathering and oxidation of primary lithium-bearing pegmatite minerals, accompanied by the leaching of lithium ions. Visually, they often occur as massive or cleavable aggregates rather than distinct crystals, displaying striking shades of purple, violet, pink, or deep brown-black due to changes in their metal oxidation states.
