Brilliant yellow semi lustrous slightly translucent crystals of sulfur to 2.0 cm in size scattered across the top of matrix with crystallized aragonite. This is in great condition. Very unusual and choice, this is a portion of a drill core. The specimen comes with a label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He acquired the specimen from Houston geologist Art Smith.Culberson County, Texas, features native sulfur deposits hosted within Permian carbonate and evaporite strata of the Delaware Basin, which were often identified during petroleum exploration and exploratory drill core operations. The geological origin of these deposits is closely tied to hydrocarbon migration and the microbial reduction of sulfates within ancient basin reservoirs. Commercial mining history in the area expanded as oil companies and mineral operators utilized drill core logs to locate deposits, eventually leading to major extraction projects that added significantly to regional industrial production during the twentieth century.
