Pingtouling's significant 2003-2004 Mimetite discovery produced many gemmy, well-formed, and superbly lustrous crystals; and while different in habit and color they compare favorably in terms of sheer quality to the great Tsumeb Mimetites of the 1970s. For Pingtouling, many of these burnt-orange, hexagonal crystals are like jewels, and on this thumbnail, they cover virtually all of the small amount of Limonitic matrix. The largest crystal is about 1.1 cm across, with most averaging about half that, and with nice three-dimensional structure that really leaps out. Like many, these have my favorite trait—the brilliant, golden radiance from reflected light along the prism faces. Talk about golden and gem-like! This is a fine example, in a very specific size range, from this world-famous discovery. Sadly, none to match have been found since, especially with the mine now flooded. For reference, see The Mineralogical Record, Vol. 38, #1, 23-30. From the collection of Dr. Ed David, which we bought in 2005.
